Which Is The Catylitic Converter?

'00 GMC Jimmy, 4.3L Vortec 4X4 5spd

 

There are two canister looking pieces on the exhaust.

 

This one is right after the Y pipe....

 

It's only about 8" long and maybe 5" dia. more of a round shape.

 

And this one is after the above and just before the muffler...

 

It is about 15" long and 8" wide and more oblong shaped.

 

The second of the two is completely empty, yet looks like it may have been cut around the seam and rewelded (really messy weld job makes me think it's not a factory weld)

 

Any help is really appreciated.

Never mind.

I've determined the second pic IS the converter and the previous owner musta gutted it.

Now I just gotta figure out why I was getting the P420 code if the cat couldn't have been clogged up.

They are both convertors. Your truck is equipped with California emissions, which added the 1st convertor in the y-pipe.

The P0420 code is for catalyst inefficiency. Meaning your gutted cat is causing the code and needs to be replaced. I would strongly suggest replacing both.

So the smaller one isn't just a resonator chamber?

I did replace the larger one.

What confused me most was that it took so long for the P0420 code to show up. I bought the truck with the converter already gutted (unknown by me at that time) and had it for atleast a year and a half with no codes?

All seems OK now. Trucks getting the MPG it used to, and the codes were cleared and haven't come back.... yet.

Hmmm, that seems unlikely. The truck was originally titled in PA. and, with me being the second owner, it has always been in PA.

More states than Califonia require the stiffer emissions and for a while there was also a "northeast emmissions" requirement. So it is still very possible that you have california style emissions.

I guess it's possible, but I don't ever recall hearing of anything like that here. And I've lived in PA over 40 years.

I don't know how other states do it, but in PA, emissions aren't governed by the state, it's a county thing.

I happen to live in a county that doesn't require them

If I lived 4 miles west or south, it would be required.

 

Any idea if there'd be an RPO code for it?

Check for code UPD (NSV) for the convertor, federal emmissions is NF2 and Cali is NC1.
