Looking To Buy A Recovery Strap

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to pick up a recovery strap. I've read to get one with loops, not hooks as the hooks become missles if the strap breaks.

I'm thinking a ProComp 30' strap, but what weight do I really need? Is the 20,000 lb break strength sufficient or should I go to 30,000 lb?

20,000 lb seems sufficient as the factory hitch is rated to much lower than that anyhow.

Look at the maximum weight you would ever safely pull out of trouble...... And what makes sense for your truck to try and pull out.....

I agree, but you don't base that on the break strength of the strap.

I've seen where a lot of the off-road jeep sites recommend a 20,000 lb break strength strap, but I'm not sure if that is just right for a jeep or over-sized. Considering these trucks are heavier than a jeep I was thinking the next size up (30,000 lb) would be the better choice.

I think it should be based on the working load which I think is around 1/3-1/4 of the break strength.

I'm leaning towards the 30' 30,000 lb strap made by ProComp.

Thoughts?

BTW I asked ProComp for a recommendation and I got a kick out of their reply:

Id say go with the p/n 330000. You never know when you might need to

pull a big Ford or Dodge out of something.

I'm going with the 30 ft 30,000 lb strap.

They're a bit pricey at about $70 + shipping.

I've seen no-name brands of the same length and break strength for about $40 + shipping.

The straps are cheaper than the ropes. The ropes run close to $100.

$70 + shipping for the ProComp 3" x 30' strap was from an eBay store called Utah Jeeper.

I also saw the no-name for $40 + shipping on eBay as well.

I bought a 3"X30' strap from a seller on ebay rated to 28K pounds. It was around $55 shipped if I recall. I like the fact that it is made in the USA. There are many straps listed on ebay for cheaper but they are Chinese made. I did not want Chinese junk for such an important item. I considered Pro Comp as well since it is a US made product but it was more than I wanted to spend.

Get the biggest one you feel comfortable spending money on. Ive broken many straps that i thought would be "strong enough" and even once had to tie all my ratchet tie downs together to pull a guy out cause my strap broke.

Don't you think its a litte ignorant to say simple because its made in China its junk. I love this country to death, I served in Iraq, and I prefer American made, but everything we make here isn't the best either.

I agree with getting the strongest rated strap you can afford....I learned my lesson buying based on what was cheap years ago. Just this past weekend a friend broke two different straps that were reasonably strong but not quite enough. I agree to stay away from the hooks.

Chris,

you may want ot invest in a bag to store your strap in. I see that you have a tonneau cover so you should have plenty of room, but a 30' x 3" strap is going to make quite a pile that can become very unruly after a while.

FWIW
