First Oil Change?

Recommended Posts

my nbs is at about 1700 miles, I intended to change the oil at 1500 but havnt gotten around to it yet. I think it will be ok, but i want to get it changed soon. Then will do the normal 3000 intervals.

Do you all still do the "1500 mile" change for the first one???

Great question, mine now has about 1800+ miles on it and I was wondering the same thing. The oil life monitor still says 76% oil life remaining, but I don't go by that, I am a 3000 mile oil changer. I am thinking of changing it around 2000-2500 and then every 3000 thereafter.

I changed my oil at 600 miles on mine (after the 500 mile break-in). I plan to switch to synthetic on my next oil change. I'm currently at about 1500 miles.

Did you do it yourself? If so, what did it look like? Was there alot/any metal particles in it from break-in?

If all you guys know more than the GM engineers how come you don't work at GM?

Modern engines are built so well now that there is no "break in" oil changes like there was in the 50's through the 90's. The Oil Life system works great and should be used instead of depending on "old wives tales".

The Technicians are going to tell you 3000 miles because the want to sell you something.

Do yourself a favor, read you owners manual and follow the guidelines set up by the manufacturer.

I do the first change at about 500 miles and switch to synthetic at that time, after that every 5k. I just saw that Escalade's for 08' will come from the factory with Mobil 1 in the engine. :chevrolet:

Mfrs also make most of their profits off of service.

The way I see it, oil is very cheap and even though it is still "ok" at 3000 miles, say 1/2 life? Why not always run oil that's still in the 1st half of it's life? Oil is the life blood of an engine, I ALWAYS want clean, fresh oil in my engine. 3000 mile oil changes are cheap insurance and my track record proves it. When I change my oil at 3000 miles, it is not black, but it's certainly not the same color it was when it went in.

You do what you want, but remind me never to buy a used vehicle from you.

BTW, yes, engines are built to better tolerances today, but there is and always will be, a break-in period. It may not be as long, or with as much debris generation, but it's still there.

Also, I am not a big believer in synthetic oil, I think conventional oil changed every 3000 miles is the way to go. Synthetic may not break down as fast, but it still gets dirty. Clean oil = long engine life with no oil leaks/burning.

Our '99 BMW "computer" told us not to change the oil, except at 15K mile intervals, including the first oil change. I thought this was ridiculous, and got in a huge argument with the corporate office over it in 2001. They eventually consented to give me my free oil change, even though the computer didn't say I needed one. Then, about a year later, BMW issued a TSB stating that the computer's intervals were too far apart.

I realize that oil is useful and perfectly good beyond 3K miles, especially synthetic, but why take a chance. A new filter and an oil change are inexpensive preventative maintenance, so I'll stick with 3K miles or once every six months, whichever comes first.

HaHa..1000% agree...!!! :chevrolet:

If you want to verify the OLM then send a sample into blackstone or other lab and you will find that the additive package of your oil (conventional or synthetic) has 70%+ life left at 3K.

Agree..."Read-da-manual" !!

Great!! That means that I am ALWAYS running oil that's at least in the top 30% of it's life span (based on 3K mile oil changes).

Oh, and additives are great, but what about dirt? Why is oil with 3000 miles on it not yellow anymore but dark brown/black?

Since my oil is better than half good when I change it, how 'bout I just sell it to you for 1/2 price then, ok? :chevrolet:
