Herculiner Kit...questions

I have discovered pitting...eating...destructive rust at the cab corners of my truck...where the old 88-98 trucks would rust out badly.

To save these areas, i would like to run a line of herculiner trim on the lower portion of my truck.

However, i saw a friend of mine do it to his Sonoma, and it looked really s**tty to me...i could see that look on a 4x4...but not a 2wd...it was like rough concrete...and somewhat dull...he used the roller with the kit..the rough surface one.

Here's my questions...

1.) Has anyone put on Herculiner with a finer roller? Like for normal house paint? Im looking for a less abrasive texture.

2.) Has anyone put on the UV Topcoat product from Herculiner? (They say it protects the finish, and makes it shine) ...how did that work out for you?

3.) The area around the cab corner hole (its about the size of a dime) is very very very weak...almost like if i really sanded the s**t out of it, it would give way to an open hole the size of a half dollar...would herculiner act like a strengthening agent for this? Or should i just sand away and let it give way...because it will just rot?

Thank you to all your answers! I sincerely appreciate this!

The herculiner stuff has big granuales so it will probably be real rough no matter what you apply it with. Duplicolor has some new paint protection stuff that will wash off. Durabak http://www.nonslipcoating.com/ also sells bed liner stuff in different colors. The herculiner is supposed to be avavailable in at least one other color too.

If you don't want the rough texture that Herculiner or Durabak, I would go to a auto paint supply store and get some spray-on bedliner stuff, or search Ebay and then spray it on with an undercoating gun. This way you can control the texture and have it turn out fairly smooth or with an orange peel look, and even color match it to your truck.

you could have it rhino lined....they will strip all the paint where they are going to put the liner on and you would be good to go....not sure if you're looking to spend that much, but it would be set for life

for a 6'6" bed on a full size truck and going over the rails i was charged $425...so i wouldnt think just doing the two sides would cost that much..

If money is not an issue, I would recommend a professionally applied bedliner. I just had one sprayed yesterday, in fact, and was very impressed. The liner I chose was a Line-x based on recommedations I saw on an earlier post. The product is so strong it can easily make up for weakened metal due to rust. A sample of the product was sprayed on an empty soda can, the product is so rigid that the can would not bend, even under great pressure. I doubt that a hand applied product would have the ability to add enough strength to reinforce weakened metal. At $459.00 it was not cheap, but I truly believe you get what you pay for. I would strongly suggest a professionally applied liner if you can afford it.
