My cousin Mark was killed on April 21st by an inattentive driver. We are having a dice run in Western PA to buy a custom headstone for him. The picture of him on his bike is going to go on the stone in color, pretty cool. I'd love to see you there. I'll try to post the pic later.

North Sewickley crash kills motorcyclist

Kristen Garrett and Michael Pound - Times Staff

The Times/KEVIN LORENZI

NORTH SEWICKLEY TWP. - A North Sewickley Township man died after suffering injuries when his motorcycle collided with a car on Route 65 on Saturday evening.

Mark A. Matiko, 41, of 118 Bennett Drive, died Saturday after being flown to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital from the accident scene, about a mile north of the township building.

Township police said Matiko was northbound on Route 65, and the car, driven by an elderly man, was southbound. The car turned left and collided with Matiko's motorcycle, police said.

Matiko was not wearing a helmet, police said.

Police at the scene did not have the names of the people involved in the accident.

The driver of the car and his wife, whose names were not released by police, had minor injuries and refused medical treatment, police said.

Frank Franklin of Daugherty Township said he was riding his motorcycle behind the car and saw the accident. Franklin said he was shocked to see the car turn and said there was no way for Matiko to avoid the accident.

According to his obituary, Matiko worked as a pharmaceutical representative, and had been a nurse at the critical care unit of The Medical Center, Beaver. He was a 1983 graduate of Riverside High School and earned a nursing degree from Carlow College.

A portion of Route 65 was closed for about an hour after the 6:45 p.m. accident.
