Wrestler Benoit, wife and son found dead

By DEBBIE NEWBY, Associated Press Writer

FAYETTEVILLE, Ga. - WWE wrestler Chris Benoit, his wife, and son were found dead Monday and police said they were investigating the deaths as a murder-suicide.

Detective Bo Turner told television station WAGA that the case was being treated as a murder-suicide, but said that couldn't be confirmed until evidence was examined by a crime lab.

The station said that investigators believe the 40-year-old Benoit killed his wife, Nancy, and 7-year-old son, Daniel, over the weekend, then himself on Monday. A neighbor called police, and the bodies were found in three rooms.

Lead investigator Lt. Tommy Pope, of the Fayette County Sheriff's Department, told The Associated Press the deaths were being investigated as homicide, and that the causes of death awaited autopsy results on Tuesday. Pope said the bodies were discovered about 2:30 p.m., but refused to release details.

The house is in a secluded neighborhood set back about 60 yards off a gravel road, surrounded by stacked stone wall and a double-iron gate. On Monday night, the house was dark except for a few outside lights. There was a police car in front, along with two uniformed officers.

Benoit was a former world heavyweight and Intercontinental champion. He also held several tag-team titles during his career.

"WWE extends its sincerest thoughts and prayers to the Benoit family's relatives and loved ones in this time of tragedy," the federation said in a statement on its Web site.

Benoit was scheduled to perform at the "Vengeance" pay-per-view event Sunday night in Houston, but was replaced at the last minute because of what announcer Jim Ross called "personal reasons."

The native of Canada maintained a home in metro Atlanta from the time he wrestled for the defunct World Championship Wrestling.

The WWE canceled its live "Monday Night RAW" card in Corpus Christi, Texas, and USA Network aired a three-hour tribute to Benoit in place of the scheduled wrestling telecast.

"My relationship with Chris has extended many years and I consider him a great friend," Carl DeMarco, the president of WWE Canada, said in a statement. "Chris was always first-class — warm, friendly, caring and professional one of the best in our business."

Hmm, a buddy wanted to get together and watch Raw earlier and I turned it on before he showed up and figured out that something must have happened. The initial reports I saw indicated that authorities were saying they had not been shot. Now with them leaning towards murder/suicide, it'll be interesting to see exactly what happened. I also heard that he missed some weekend events due to an illness in the family. That's definitely sad though, he was a hell of a competitor, and for his family to lose 3 members is certainly tragic.

Foxnews.com is reporting he strangled his wife and suffocated his son before hanging himself in his weight room. No telling what was going on in his mind. This is extremely sad.

Rest in Peace????? He strangled his wife, and suffocated his son. Go to H*ll.

I'd be really careful where you tread with your words. Unfortunately we will never know if this was solely the result of roids or if there were underlying mental problems as well. At any rate, I wish his family to rest in peace.

Family..... absolutley RIP. As for him, roids or not..... no reason to take the family with you. If you have underlying mental problems, take yourself out, not your family.... and absolulelty not a 7 year old child. No excuse for that. Do you have children???? My god, Tread with my words...... I think not.

I agree, get your self some help if you have those kind of issues, I don't think they just pop up. Sad for the family, not so for him.

Like I said before, tread lightly. Try to imagine doing something bad and not having the power to stop yourself from doing it.

You obviously have NO idea what mental illness can do to a person or a family. I do. When someone is mentally ill, all reality and common sense are out the window. My wife was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and tried twice to commit suicide. I don't understand why she did it and get this....she didn't know why either. Shocking isn't it? Fortunately because of her loving family (yes I have two children), we got her some help and she's on medication. She will have to be for the rest of her life and will have to have frequent checkups with both a psychiatrist and a psychologist. It costs money, but a life is priceless and I'll do anything for her. Don't be quick to judge people with mental illness because it's not their fault.

Now try to imagine it again. When you grow up a little bit and get more experience in mental illness, then you can get back to me.

Thanks for your wonderful response, but yes, I do know a little about mental illness. Amazing how you are not the only one with a family member with a mental illness. I'm sure most people these days know someone with one.... still just an excuse. Do you think that if he killed his wife and son, and not himself, he would be set free just because of that?? I know... lawyers these days could probably get him off with a mental illness plea, but come on..... there is NO excuse for killing someone.

Guys, can we wait for official word before we burn the guy at the stake? All we're hearing now is preliminary crap. The absolute truth will come out in a few days.

Somebody could have just as well offed the whole family and made it look like Murder-suicide. Far fetched? possibly. But it is still a possibility.

And I'm sorry but people jumping the gun on crap irritates the hell outta me.

It's painfully obvious you know little about it otherwise you wouldn't say it's "still just an excuse". You're talking about legal maneuvering with regard to a dead guy. :) Not worth responding to at this point.

I'm no expert and do not pretend to be. The only thing I know about mental illness is what I've been privy to personally. All I was saying is that we don't know the whole situation about the Benoit ordeal and unfortunately we probably will never know. As Forrest Gump always said, "...and that's all I have to say about that."

I keep hearing that "roid rage" is a possibility in this & as someone who has been around people on roids, I could see it as a possibility...BUT

the WWE.com website has some good points to contradict the "roid rage" angle. The time between murders, the strange cell phone messages sent by Benoit, the bible being placed by the bodies...none of this seems like rage, to me it seems pretty thought out.

Check out the WWE.com site & read the details...see what YOU think!

Am I the only one who finds getting facts from the WWE website amusing? I have a hard enough time respecting these guys anyways, let alone with this kind of stuff.
