Stock Hu & Subs?

Recommended Posts

I would like to add 1 sub like a 12" sub or something in my crewcab ( probably an underseat box ) and add in a amp mounted on the back of one of the seats, I was told to make this possible, my stock HU would need to have an rca pre-amp? I'm a little confused about this, I know hardly anything about sound systems, so any help & information is appreciated, Is it possible for me to do this though? I want to keep my stock HU because for one i'm cheap lol, and 2 I dont want to lose my steering wheel audio controls, its a really good head unit, compared to the one in my '99 F250

I also have a couple more questions, does my truck have the Bose system? & is my HU a 6 disk in dash player? I never saw anything about it being multidisk on the MSRP but I have 6 speakers if that matters any. & heres a pic

YES, you can add an amp/sub to factory head unit.

you either need to buy an amp that has speaker level inputs

-or-

buy a line output converter (shown here- http://www.crutchfield.com/S-Es6Za4SX6kB/c...21&I=101PL2)

both convert the powered signal meant for the speakers into a usable signal for the amp. the amp w/ built-in inputs negates the need for RCA cables. if you plan to always use factory HU, it's the better option of the two, but usually more expensive

i'm installing the seperate converter in my truck tomorrow, b/c in a few months i'll be changing my HU to an aftermarket model, which have preamp outputs (RCA's).

might want to consider letting a pro place install your amp if you're still not sure what i'm talking about. they should charge you 10-20 bucks for converter and 30-50 to put the amp in (cost of wires not included).

NO, you do not have the Bose system.

NO, you do not have the 6-disk changer.

In my last truck I had a pretty big system hooked up to my stock H/U until I could afford an alpine. But it was possible I had it done at cartunes a (kicker L5 12" square with a kx625.1 amp) and it did sound alright But I did have a problem with it. I blew 2 subs and fried one amp with the stock one, then when I got an aftermarket it sounded 100x times better, I could turn it up 2x as loud and never had any problems since.

Does it say "Bose" on the door speakers? Dumb question but my HU does look like that and I do have a Bose sound system.

Nope it doesn't say Bose anywhere. I thought I did cause it looks like i have 2 speakers in each front door panel & having 1 in each of the rear would make 6, and I knew the Bose had 6 lol. Oh well.

The main reason I want to keep my stock headunit is because I dont want to lose the steering wheel radio buttons, can anyone verify that theres some way I can still keep them operable with an aftermarket headunit?

In order to keep the steering wheel controls (SWC) you'll need an adapter that's compatible with the aftermarket head unit. Check compatibility on Crutchfield for your specific truck and head unit combo for info on the adapters. The have other adapters to maintain the onstar system and door chimes and such as well.

im new to the site, first post actually

but i had the 6 disc bose set up for almost a year in my 06 and i had a line out converter on it

it worked well

only reason why i replaced that head unit was because the new one has a touch screen

im tempted to get the adapter to make my steering wheel buttons to work too but the bose onstar install harness was plenty expensive
