Little Rat F##%$, Need Ya'll's Advice

reading here has been an education here for me so far, and the topics i've read about people getting keyed is alarming, and sickening.........well, we just gat back from a 3 day trip at the beach and while washing my new Black GMT-900, low and behold, on the tailgate is a nice 2" long scratch that is surely deliberate as it is up near the whale tail piece and about 4" in from the left edge.............i was sure i could compound it out and then use some Scratch-X on it to make it go away, but "wow", the paint ain't too thick is it?

anyways, now i've got an area of what looks like polished primer showing through that's about 1/2" long and a 1/16" wide..........

i can't live with it, so what's my options here?

have the whole tail gate repainted?

try to spray touch up Black and clear coat in that area?

also, anyone have any ideas as to how much a repaint might be?

Only way to make it look right is to have the whole tailgate painted. If it's that new, take it back to the dealer... paint shouldn't be that thin. If it is.... it's wrong.

your probably looking at about 600 bucks to repaint the tail gate. If you can do all the prep, which sounds like it just needs to be sanded, you may get the price down a bit. Problem is if you have an off color like silver it may not match the rest of the truck due to the different dispersal patterns of the robotic spray guns compared to good old hand held ones.

you could however get a custom paint job done on it. Probably cost a G or more but would look awesome.

say something like these.

that's a killer paint job.

went to a local custom guy who once did work on my wife's Jag which is blue with violet overcoat.....couldn't tell he even touched the car except that the dealer induced rear dent was gone from new parts....he ain't cheap, but for $350.00, he's doin it, and i may have it back by weeks end....................other estimate from a friends body shop was $275.00...........i am gladly paying the extra as i know Bruce's work.

one thing i won't do again however is fix a scratch, at least the way i tried...............lesson learned :chevrolet:

yup...theres pros out there for a reason. I do my own scratch repair every now and than, but nothing thats down to primer.
