Front Axel Seals

Front axel seals are leaking. Dealer wants about $440 to do both. Is this a tough job? The seals can't cost much so I guess there is about 4 hours labor since they charge $90 an hour. If it takes them 4 hours I imagine it would take me 8. Anyone done their own or know what a fair price to have them done?

I haven't done them on my GM, but did them on my son's Jeep. I would imagine it's not much different. We ended up doing a full brake job (replaced rotors, calipers and pads), u-joints and bushings since the Jeep had about 160,000 on it.

I don't think it's really a difficult job, if you have the right tools, and if you have 100k+ miles, you might as well fix whatever else needs fixing while you have it apart. If you spend the same $440 on parts, you'll have an almost new front-end.

As far as a fair price, you can call another repair shop and just ask them what they would charge. I always ask for the breakdown between labor and parts. Four hours seems a little high considering they have a lift, but I don't know what the book says.

Last one I did took me about an hour. Nothing hard about it.

I called the shop here in town, he has done work for me before, he told me $200 to do both. Sounds more reasonable. I can probably do it, but if something unforseen happens I cant have my truck out of commission.

Heck, for $200 I'd let him do it.

Yea, the older I get the less enthused I am about spending my free time wrenching.
