Never Noticed This Before

The other day while checking the air pressiure in the tires, I noticed the front driver side wheel well has a wire bundle that is actually exposed in the wheel well. It is sleeved in some heavy plastic. I thought it had slipped down there, but on further checking, there is a cable clamp grommet securing it to the inside of the fendor (engine side) so it is apparently there by design. It makes me wonder why they didn't rout it up another 2 inches so it would not be exposed at all. I can imagine some freak thing like a tree limb in the road that you don't see in time and it gets between the cable and wheel well and rips it out. Also, it is exposed to the nasty snow/salt/ice melt stuff in the winter. WTF??

TXL (automotive grade wire) is mostly immune to everything but strong UV light and all the connectors are sealed (they're rated for like 10feet submersion) so I would't worry about any weather. I'd have to see which one you're talking about but I know that my wheel wells (beyond where wheels spit stuff) are clean as the day I bought the truck.

No idea about a branch though. I haven't heard of anybody having any sort of problem though.

Funny, since I had this truck since new ('01) I never noticed this cable before. Anyway it probably wont cause a problem just seemed strange when I saw it exposed like that when it appears there is room to keep it in the enclosed area. Might be a bend radius type issue when routing the cable.

Is it your engine block heater cord?

I don't have a block heater. Not sure what cables are in the sleeve. My truck was dripping from a heavy rain, I didn't feel like crawling around under it. Will check it out just for curiosity this week.

I remember on my 2000 GMC Sierra, the wire harness for the fog lights literally came within 1 inch of the front tire directly in front of it and I never had a problem.
