Going By Vin Number

My buddy is thinking about buying a '95 silverado and all he has for info as far as gears and stuff is the vin number. Is there any way to find out basically what the RPO codes tell you with only having the vin??

the VIN itself will yield you very little information for the vehicle. If you know how to decode it, it will tell you the plant, the chassis, weight group and engine and then the actual serial number for the truck. The RPO tag is inside the glove box if it hasn't been changed or removed. If it is not there, contact your local parts department with the VIN and see if they will print a copy of it for you. Or during business hours tomorrow, someone here could do the same.

Yes, the dealer can access the RPO codes using the VIN.

Exactly. Give the vin to a dealer, and they can put it in the system and get a full invoice on the model, what it had, when it was built, GM service history, etc.

You also might want to consider the fact that a 95 model might have been modified over the years. Those were such great trucks that many people wouldn't have hesitated to upgrade them. 12 years on the road anything can happen.

It's so hard to tell what someone is going after from the e-mails, but if this helps, has your buddy considered taking a small digital camera with him when he test drives the truck and just take a picture of the inside glove box door. Of course if he is buying without directly looking this won't work.

I did this on my truck and while a little blurry, the point is you could read all the RPO codes inside the house and use the lists on this and other sites to figure out what you have.
