07 Nbs Missing/surging On Street But Idles Smoothly.

Had the Silverado nbs 6 weeks now and after my initial elation (3 days) of what a truly well thought-out vehicle I had purchased, I began to notice what seemed like a rapid-fire surging or misfire/gas starvation sensation at street and highway speeds, mostly unloaded constant speeds. At first I thought it the unfamiliarity with the new vehicle/tire characteristics. I read with interest the discussion on this forum on tire pressures, suspension and road harmonics. I did, lower my rear tire pressure to 32psi from factory spec of 35# and found the ride much improved, but the unnerving power loss/surge remained and was irrespective of V4/V8 mode, which works flawlessly.

 

 

I’ve now been to my dealer 3 times with the problem: On the first trip the problem was acknowledged and said to be found existing on similarly equipped Chevys (5.3L iron, 4-speed auto, 3.42 locker) in dealer stock and their shop truck. Dealer said GM recommended a fuel system flush and that I run a couple of tanks of top-tier gas like Chevron through it (puh-leeese.) Playing the game I did, expecting nothing and was not disappointed, but playing the game like a trooper all the same. Next, I discovered that the tranny was extremely low on ATF, barely showing on stick. My thinking was the power loss could possibly be air in hydraulics or something. Since DEXRON VI is only available at a GM dealer and maybe NASA I went back and was topped off. No charge, No change. So back I go, this time they said a TSB described my problem very closely and there was ECM and tranny (TCM?) program updates. They likewise had no effect.

 

 

3100 miles today and I took the unit back for an oil change and an auto door-lock problem (fixed with a BCM update.) While there, I asked to talk to the service manager about my annoying power problem. I told him my Tach also fluctuated 100-200 rpm on level road with constant accelerator pressure. During the meeting that the shop foreman also attended, I was told that the Tach variation was normal and GM sez that they are aware of the problem. I was assured that they (dealer) would be vigilant (as always) in making sure that new programming was flashed as it became available. Otherwise, there were no codes; there is no warranty-reimbursable action; and enjoy my new pickup and have a nice day (I paraphrased this last sentence, it was much more diplomatic than this, but un-entertaining.)

 

 

Has anyone else noticed this irregular engine performance? I am crazy about this new truck in every other way, but, as good of an engineering job as I behold in this model, I cannot believe GM would let such an obvious drivability issue survive to the assembly line. I would appreciate feedback as to whether my copy is unique and defective or if this is commonplace and I should grow to like it. Maybe I’m just an anal SOB.

I have a new Denali with a 6.2 and contacted the dealer 1 time and showed up at his door 1 time with the exact same senerio. I was also sent packing with the same we know about the problem mojo. high test made it better. I think it's a computer adjusting the timing for best performance/fuel economy issue. I was thinking of sending a letter to GM directly.

Mine surges too, i notice it at 30 mph on back road just barley on the gas. The other day i had it in 4x4 on the highway about 45-50 mph and it was doing it bad, with a slight load. I have exhaust i just put on and so now i notice it more, i also have a diablo programer and it does it with and without the programer, i was hopping when i put the tune in it would go away but it didn't.

I suggest you call customer assistance and voice your complaint. They will give you a complaint number then wait a couple of weeks, and if you haven't had a fix or response call again. GM maybe in the process of fixing the problem. Most of all DO NOT get a custom tune before its fixed. Warranty claims & complaints are a tracking device and if you fix it your self or ignore it GM has no way of knowing there is a problem.

Be patent and friendly with your dealer & customer assistant.

    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?   
    • Do you think this width might affect the chalk test with a higher pressure closer to 65psi? I think lowering the pressure makes sense to get the tread to lay flatter
