Doesn't It Seem Dumb To You?

Why do people that can afford almost anything always get presented with expensive gifts and prizes?

For example, Mike Lowell, the 2007 World Series MVP, was given two Chevrolet vehicles. Come on, he could buy those two vehicles with his pocket change.

I just don't understand why the rich and famous are always given things, when they would have no problem paying for it themselves?????

Anyone else confused by this?

Yeah, seems kinda dumb to give a pro sports player two new vehicles - like they really need that (most of them could afford to buy Ferrari's anyway). If Chevy wanted to drum up some publicity, maybe they should have held a contest and awarded a new vehicle to the two biggest fans of the guy - get the average Joe involved and create some hubbub about GM through the contest.

On the other hand, if someone can't afford the vehicle in the first place, how likely is it they are going to be able to afford the registration, insurance, and the income tax (yes, you have to report the value of the vehicle as income on your tax return - I believe Chevy is required to declare the value of the vehicle gift to the IRS so they will be looking for it on your return) that goes along with it? Personally, I think being awarded a brand new vehicle is overrated - I'd rather just have the cash and no headaches.

Its all relative man...

You get socks and underwear for Xmas...they get 100 yo scotch and Cuban cigars.

Gifts are pretty much the same percentage, or apparent cost.

A hummer is about 60G a lot of money for us....thats the same or more than our actual vehicle. But to someone with a Bently, 2 Ferraris, a Lambro, and a tricked out Esclade, 60G is like getting a pair of socks. :dunno::crackup:

I don't think any ball player would have a problem paying cash for any car or truck they wanted.

Sounds like envy clouding vision of the picture: It's the World Series MVP Award.

If you're gonna envy something, go big time and envy A-Rod's 1/4 BILLION DOLLAR, ten year contract. Is anyone worth that kind of money just to play baseball?

its sickening... for instance my fathers a firefighter/emt and a pipefitter... he works hard for his money and he does very well for himself... but if you compare it to some guy who grew up playing baseball... and is now in the majors making millions and millions... to play a game.. doin what he loves...its absolutely gross.. u can argue with me all day long that his "schedule is tough and this and that.."

if gm was smart... they'd go around spreading a more positive type of pr and give away new vehicles or even certified used vehicles to low income familys and familys who have been torn apart bye natural disasters... or had other terrible things happen to them... for instance children of 9/11 who lost both of their parents... granted they got allot of money to live there lives.. what about more practical things like cars, gas... because there are a bunch of 20 year old big brothers and sisters that are now having to play the role of mom and dad...

or what about the fire departments that loaded up there rigs with food water survival supplies and headed out the NY for 9/11 or New Orleans ... without even so much as double thinking... in my eyes... thats a true mvp... not some guy who can catch and hit a baseball... hell i can do that...

but that would be the right thing to do... and since when was that ever right? :dunno:

but thats just my .02...

Well said.

If a doctor, emt, nurse, cop or firefighter etc, who saves lives, cant make money like that. Why should someone who runs around a field, or skates around a frozen pond, make money like that.

I am all for a salary cap. If they wanna make millions than endorse things. Actually do some work to make money for once.

I've heard the argument that sports stars have a short career (5-10years max) so they have to make more in those years to offset the rest of their lives....Is anyone on here gonna make 1/4 bill in their lifetime?

I, sure as hell wont, unless I win a couple lottos. I wont even make more than 5 mil...so why do they need to make so much.

You know what I find even dumber? People paying $500 a seat to see them or $300 for a jersey with somebody else's name on it...Both things perpetuating it.

However, more power to the people that support it, and more power to the athletes that get paid...That's the free market in action.

People are paid massive amounts of money to play sports only because they have alot of talent, which generates money through means of tickets, memorabilia, tv, etc.

I'm not saying anyone can be a doctor, but I know alot more doctors than professional athletes.

It all boils down to YOU watching the game.

Follow the money. YOU give yours away; it ends up in THEIR pocket.

YOU are the reason they make so much money. Similarly, if they weren't so "important" they wouldn't recieve new Chevy's. Don't blame Chevy, it's your fault.

*"YOU" not expressly directed at any particular person posting in this thread unless they happen to watch baseball and/or other sports.

lol..... not everyone sits around and spends 100's of dollars at games... or on memorabilia...

some people donate to funds for fallen firefighters and police officers... but it never seems to help out there pay... be nice if people recognized real heroes...

and yes it is chevy's fault... they dont have to hand a "important" person like a baseball player the car just cuz there "good" at baseball ... they choose to.. instead of doing whats right..so yes... it is THEIR fault...

I think everyone is completely missing the point :)

This is nothing more than A MARKETING PLOY!

Who cares if an average joe wins or drives a chevy? (Other than the guy who won.) BUT if the world series MVP is rollin' in a new chevy, then d**n! I better go buy me one too!

It's all publicity, all marketing.

For what it's worth, I went to the Bills/Titans game in Rich Stadium last Christmas Eve, TOYOTA gave away a new Tundra to an "average joe."

    • Are you using a weight distribution hitch system with your trailer as that alone can change the actual tire pressure requirements needed. It would prove interesting to see what the actual individual axle weights are on your truck when you are hooked up to the trailer. In fact when your hooked to the trailer, typically if anything unless it has a large capacity weight distribution system that is over cranked, often the weight on the front axle will be less when hooked up vs driving empty and certainly if one doesn't have a weight distribution hitch. Really the only times one may get up there with weight on the steer axle is if there was a snow plow mounted on the front or a motorcycle on a rack or with a very large jockey tank full of fuel at the front of the box that transfers a bit of its weight to the front axle.    And of course your tires carry more weight for a given tire pressure due to their size vs a stock sized tire so there is that to take into the equation as well.
    • Great info here thank you. I just joined, we have a 2014 Silverado truck we bought about 4 years ago with less than 5,000 miles on it. It has approximately 24,000 on it now. It appears to have all the standard issues that people are talking about. Occasional charging problems especially using 110 volt, occasional blinking triangle where nothing will turn on when first starting the truck but it will reset itself if you wait 10 to 15 minutes. Noisy coupler between the flywheel and the generator. Our truck is speed limited to 74 mph, is there any way to change that? The latest issue we have been dealing with is when driving long distance on the highway at full speed the generator does not keep the batteries charged. The meter will go into the yellow/red border Zone for charge status and the yellow triangle will illuminate solid but the generator will not keep the battery charged, not sure why the controller doesn't tell the gas engine to increase RPM to increase generator output it usually stays well below 25 kilowatts even though the battery is discharging and I have to slow down the highway to 45 mph and eventually pull over and let the truck idle to charge the battery so I can continue driving at speed. Has anyone had this issue before or have any idea how to diagnosed it? When via Motors was around it they were very helpful at troubleshooting. This becomes much if the Terrain is hilly and you're towing a small trailer
    • I have the GMC accessory (REV) cover installed by dealer. Ordered with the truck.  They did a very good install job, can't find a single issue. Some water gets in around the tailgate but no where else.  You can see daylight around the tailgate but that's not the covers fault.  Installation is means everything. Guys at my dealer were seasoned pros, not inexperienced here today good tomorrow types, like many dealers employ for these jobs.   I don't mind paying for a professional job.
    • Like others have said, they will all leak. Mainly at the corners.   I have owned several and the best has been my current one. Revolver x4
    • About 8 months after an alignment job by the dealer I started experiencing a pretty significant clunk in the front end on hard left hand turns usually parking lot speeds almost at lock.  Occasionally get the same on hard rights too.   Discovered that the lower control arm attachment bolts are TTY and only to be used for a single use. And then I found some evidence of a TSB that indicates you can over torque those fasteners to about 130 foot pounds.   Asked a local shop to investigate and they found 3 out of four bolts loose and retorqued.   I've ordered the MOOG    K100421 lower control arm bolt kit that is completely reusable and not TTY.    Is the 80 ft pounds a realistic number?  Anyone have experience with those bolts?
