My Search For A Programmer

Recommended Posts

Posted

I am new to the full size truck game (traded a GTO for my GMC) and I wanted to hear from the three big companies about their programmers. I wrote to Hypertech, Edge and DiabloSport about their products. I did this over a week ago and so far only Edge has responded. For Reference I have a 2007 GMC SLE 4x4 with 6.0 short box and extended cab and 20inch wheels.

First my question:

I am hoping you can answer some specific questions regarding your product to help me decide which product to buy. I am considering the Hypertech programmer, the Edge Evolution programmer and Diablo Predator programmer for my truck. In addition to tuning my truck for greater horse power and better MPG I am looking for the following:

1) Reduce or remove the torque management feature GM has programmed into its transmissions.

2) Reduce or remove the 4sec wide open throttle delay GM has programmed into its motors

3) I am hoping for my motor to use the AFM more to increase my highway MPG. Currently my V4 mode only works on the flattest of roads on cruse control below 70mph. Increasing the V4 duty cycle or maybe having V4 mode during idle would be a nice addition to a power programmer.

4) The ability to work with light mods such as cold air intake and free flow exhaust that includes headers and a cat back system.

The Edge response:

Sorry for the inconvenience, but we do not remove the torque management, adjust for wide open throttle, or adjust or change the V4 mode. The product will work no problem with the cold air intakes or exhaust systems. If you have any other questions then just let me know.

Thanks,

I had read some good things about Edge here on the forum but after this response I am not so sure I want to part with $400. Though you guys would want to read and chime in.

The only programmer I know of that will eliminate or modify the GM

"torque management" program (note that the 4 second delay and

the torque mgmt. are the same thing......who the hell came up with that

4 second delay BS anyhoo?) is the Diablo preditor !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I used the Hypertech 3 unit on my 04 and had great results!

I expect the Diablo will be my next programmer...............

Unless you plan to change your settings from time to time, your money is better spent on a tuned PCM than a programmer :)

I had a Hypertech for a couple of years before I tried a custom tune. No comparison in my case as the custom tune performed WAY better. Torque Management was the biggest issue. Gone 100K on my wai4me tune and I couldn't be happier. I also have a built FLT transmission and I'm not sure you want to completely remove TM on a stock drivetrain.

I have been running a Hypertech III recently and have seen "0" increase in performance or fuel economy, truck reaches the same speed on my freeway entrance ramp as before and gets the same 12.4 mpg month long average as before (80% in town driving). Factor in the 10% more I am paying for premium fuel and I am spending more money than I was stock. I did not raise the shift points or top speed but did increase the shift firmness. The reason I am running it is to try and raise mileage but it seems that maybe the stock tune is running as much timing as possible already during cruise? I don't have any pinging so my next step is going to be running 87 octane with a 93 tune up here in the cool weather and see what that does. Let us know how it works out.

Wait4me is the tuner I used. TM/Delay reduced. He has a tune already for your type of truck which has been used by many of us already. I like it. He has a web site and it s a mail order, ecm/tcm sent to you or you can send yours to him and wait. Do a search as there have been mant long posts about him and other tuners as well. As far as AFM , he would answer your questions BUT I don t think you can do such things as far as idle in 4 mode. These are programed to only stay in 4 mode for what I believe is like several mins max, even under the right conditions due to overheating and other motor isssues. I am no expert, so speak to Jesse, is his name, and he is one of the experts. Just for an example, my truck would not break the rear wheels from a dead stop before the tune, now it leaves 3 ft or so of rubber. Maybe 1 MPG more and I had an 89 octane tune. I had my tune two or three months ago and The Deablo preditor was not able to change all the paramiters that the custom tune did.

I hear you about the custom tune but there is no way I want to spend hard earned money only to have the tune erased on the off chance some GM mechanic gets some bullitin from GM and "updates" my computer during an oil change. At the very least, with a hand held I can put the stock tune back in the truck before a service visit. At this point it appears my search is now down to the DiabloSport or the Hypertech.

The fact that the Edge does NOTHING for the TM or throttle delay has turned me off their product.

The Diablo tune does not remove TM either. The throttle delay is minimized however. I am much happier with my Diablo than I was with my Edge unit. Plus it was $100 cheaper.

I can't believe vmax has'nt responded yet.

From what I hear, officially Edge says they do not screw with the TM and Abuse mode settings and the delays and all that. Under the radar most people are saying that when they install their Edge programmer they notice a difference, less lag is the most common response. No one claims that the Anti-Abuse mode is changed or that the lag is gone completed associated with the TM but the word is that there is an improvement. You can believe what you want but you really half to pick one and try it for yourself, on a side note, I don't think its a good idea to completly remove the TM and abuse mode parameters on the truck. They are there for a reason and although I certinly would'nt mind reducing them I don't think I would ever remove them completely.

Vmax has a nasty toothache and is VERY crabby, sorry.

I have posted several write-ups on my opinion and research of the Edge. If anyone is interested, do a search both here and in the performance/tuning section, there are several threads about the Edge from several members here who have it. No negative opinions yet.

BTW, I agree, it DOES significantly reduce acceleration lag and brought stock 8+sec 0-60 time to low 6's. With "TM" still there. Rest assured, when/if the competition addresses TM on these new E38 ECMs, Edge will too. I like the look of the Diablo Trinity that is coming out soon, but Diablo does not tune the TCMs yet. If I hear rave reviews of the Trinity, I may try that one too, just for the customizability of it. But the Edge is a great tuner (for a handheld).

Ouch, this d**n thing hurts!!!

I would rather go with HPTuners. I have it and it works wonders, learning how to use it is a little difficult but all the instructions are there, and you can tune your car all you want with a laptop. Can change it to Track/Street/Gas Saver/GM Dealership (AKA Stock) withing minutes. Thats about it.

HP Tuners or EFI Live would be sweet. But then I'd have to buy a laptop. LOL And find the time. Maybe someday, after the warranty is expired. Not trying to make a racetruck out of it, just wanted my throttle response back.

I went with a wait4me with another ECM. When I was under warranty, I would just swap the ECM (it is right next to the battery) and the dealer could do anything eh wanted without affecting my tune. The other advantage was they never know it was modified because I always swapped the stock one back in. The tune WITH ECM was still quite a bit less than my Hypertech.

GUYS.......According to the Preditors web site and spec. info. the

TM program can be modified or turned off.....................
