Power Steering Pump Design

I am trying to find out if I could buy and install an older version GM power steering pump on my truck. I would like to get one that is quiet and not prone to an irritating whine. Is there maybe a good aftermarket pump available that is quiet? Why hasn't GM redesigned and recalled these things? Do they really think that all of us are so stupid that we do not mind?

Is it possible just to replace one part inside the pump to make the noise go away? If yes, which part is it and what is the cost? Can somebody give me part number and what it involves to install a new component(s) in the pump? What is the part number for the power steering pump for my truck?

Condition/Concern:

Some owners may comment on a power steering pump whine noise. This whine noise is most commonly heard between idle and 2000 rpm coming from the power steering pump.

Recommendation/Instructions:

Reports of flushing and refilling the power steering system with Valvoline SynPower Power Steering Fluid have reduced or eliminated this noise. Valvoline SynPower Power Steering Fluid is a synthetic fluid and is available at most auto parts stores in quart size containers. In most case 3 or 4 quarts will be needed to flush and fill the system.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

Somebody posted that he had done this, and it did not help at all. So I am skeptical too. What is the power steering pump number for my truck and what other year pumps will fit? Anybody? Common, there are some GM parts guys in this forum. And that noisy valve inside the pump? Is it available separately?

Replacing the steering fluid with Valvoline syn fluid make the whine worse on NBS trucks. The dealer followed the older TSB for my truck and the whine is louder. There is a newer TSB for the 07 NBS trucks that states not to do anything until a fix is found.

I don't know what part number you have for a power steering pump, but I would just go to gmparts direct.com or something of the like and check it out. I would try a fluid flush (just with the regular recommended power steering fluid) just to see if it helps. However, that thing is only one year old so it shouldn't need it. I get the occasional whine (but I have a 2wd with rack and pinion so we don't even have the same set up).

What is odd is that if I use my truck more often, the whine goes away. It appears that it comes back only when the truck sits for a week or so (in my garage). I do not use it as an everyday driver. Have only 6,700 miles on it so far. Just to make it clear, the whine is not that loud, and it comes and goes. Go figure. I would like the take care of it under warranty if it means just replacing the pump. But what if they give me a pump that whines even worse? Obviously, there is a design problem somewhere. This is why I asked about older truck (95-98) pumps. Would they fit? I do not think those had a whining problem.

Would this be true for my truck as well? Was the steering system completely redesigned for the '07 on NBS trucks?

GM engineered the entire steering system from the ground up for the NBS which means that in all likely hood, this problem should not be present for you.

What is the best method to replace the power steering fluid? By disconnecting the low pressure hose and idling the engine while adding the new fluid to the reservoir?
