Ever Had Anything Stolen?

This is for anyone who's ever had anything stolen, but particularly musicians. I'm so sick of hearing about stolen instruments just because it brings back some horrible memories. We never get to hear about the good(?) stolen instrument stories.

About 12 years ago, my brother's first real guitar (Charvel Model 5) was stolen from his apartment in North Carolina by...his ex-wife or someone she was banging at the time. She ended up pawning it and when he filed a police report, the detective didn't do anything since it was supposedly a family member who took it. He thought it was my brother's brother since it was pawned under the name Bobbi. This is obviously a female name, but my brother knew she was having an affair with a cop at the time. Anyway nothing was ever done.

Fast forward to this past Monday in Texas. My brother gets a call from a guy asking if he was the guy that did guitar work. He explains that he got a referral from another musician he knew and that he just bought a guitar real cheap for his daughter to learn on. My brother told him to bring the guitar by. The guy walks in with a beat up silver Charvel case and sets it on the counter. When my brother opened it up, he couldn't believe his eyes. It was just like his old Charvel right down to the dual P.J. Marx humbuckers. When he removed the neck pickup, there were his initials!!! The guitar was pretty beat up compared to when he owned it. He told the story to the new owner and the owner said he would give it back to my brother. My brother said it wouldn't be right, so they made a deal regarding a drum kit and another guitar. So now, he has his first guitar back! What are the odds of that?

Now I wish my 3 Spectors would show up like that!

That's amazing! If anyone stole my bass, I don't know what I'd do.

One time my band was playing a show at a college, and after our set, some other guy comes up to me and asks if he can borrow my bass, that he forgot his. Immediately I said no, I don't lend out equipment. Well, he kept pleading, and pleading, and he was bigger and stronger than me, so eventually I agreed to let him borrow it for his set. I watched his band's whole set, and never took my eye off it. That was the most nerve-racking 45 minutes of my life. It just didn't seem right to see someone else playing my baby.

I'd have a few questions for whoever they bought it from.

The way I look at is that if I saw it last in North Carolina then a dozen or so years later it shows up in my shop and I get it back, it was meant to be. I had 3 Spectors stolen in 1991 and I'd be glad if I got the NS-2 back and they kept the other two.

my cougar (the car) got stolen in 06 w/ 2 shotguns and a bunch of tools in the trunk. I saw it driving down the HWY in August and follwed that SOB, while calling a few State Trooper buddies of mine, home. To my amazement we found my tools and guns in the garage. He didn't even bother to clean my stuff out of the car. Still had some textbooks, my bookbag, and registration. At least i got my stuff back.

Oh I've got another wild story about a stolen '87 Silverado!

A friend of mine got his Silverado stolen off of Ft. Sam Houston in 1990. Back then, it was an open post so anybody could drive on. They busted out the vent window to get access to the window crank. Then they pulled the ignition tumbler and used a screwdriver to start her up and off they went. After the MPs did their work and he contacted the insurance company to get the ball rolling, this guy was in a major funk. The truck was his pride and joy.

The following Saturday, we decided to drive to Nuevo Laredo just across the border to do some shopping and just hang out. After much badgering, we convinced this guy to come with us since he'd been moping around all week. We got to a corner cafe around noonish and ordered a few beers. We were about to settle on lunch when we heard a big block rumble around the corner(my friend had stuffed a 454 between the fenders). I looked over and nudged my buddy who had already heard the beast and turned to look. I mentioned how much that truck looked like his and he shook his head in disbelief. We both casually walked over to where the truck was, he took his keys out of the pocket and unlocked the door....unbelievable! When he asked what he should do, I told him to drive it the hell out of there and me and my two buddies ran to my truck and hauled ass. We got across the border and ran for San Antonio. We got everything straightened out with the MP's and not only did the insurance company pay for the damage to the truck, his agent sprang for an alarm system! Talk about lucky!

    • Great info here thank you. I just joined, we have a 2014 Silverado truck we bought about 4 years ago with less than 5,000 miles on it. It has approximately 24,000 on it now. It appears to have all the standard issues that people are talking about. Occasional charging problems especially using 110 volt, occasional blinking triangle where nothing will turn on when first starting the truck but it will reset itself if you wait 10 to 15 minutes. Noisy coupler between the flywheel and the generator. Our truck is speed limited to 74 mph, is there any way to change that? The latest issue we have been dealing with is when driving long distance on the highway at full speed the generator does not keep the batteries charged. The meter will go into the yellow/red border Zone for charge status and the yellow triangle will illuminate solid but the generator will not keep the battery charged, not sure why the controller doesn't tell the gas engine to increase RPM to increase generator output it usually stays well below 25 kilowatts even though the battery is discharging and I have to slow down the highway to 45 mph and eventually pull over and let the truck idle to charge the battery so I can continue driving at speed. Has anyone had this issue before or have any idea how to diagnosed it? When via Motors was around it they were very helpful at troubleshooting. This becomes much if the Terrain is hilly and you're towing a small trailer
    • I have the GMC accessory (REV) cover installed by dealer. Ordered with the truck.  They did a very good install job, can't find a single issue. Some water gets in around the tailgate but no where else.  You can see daylight around the tailgate but that's not the covers fault.  Installation is means everything. Guys at my dealer were seasoned pros, not inexperienced here today good tomorrow types, like many dealers employ for these jobs.   I don't mind paying for a professional job.
    • Like others have said, they will all leak. Mainly at the corners.   I have owned several and the best has been my current one. Revolver x4
    • About 8 months after an alignment job by the dealer I started experiencing a pretty significant clunk in the front end on hard left hand turns usually parking lot speeds almost at lock.  Occasionally get the same on hard rights too.   Discovered that the lower control arm attachment bolts are TTY and only to be used for a single use. And then I found some evidence of a TSB that indicates you can over torque those fasteners to about 130 foot pounds.   Asked a local shop to investigate and they found 3 out of four bolts loose and retorqued.   I've ordered the MOOG    K100421 lower control arm bolt kit that is completely reusable and not TTY.    Is the 80 ft pounds a realistic number?  Anyone have experience with those bolts?
    • subscribe to alldata.com, that will have gm's brake bleeding procedure.  and what you have to do likely varies, as if you just replaced a caliper and the MC didn't go dry, you most likely can just do a normal bleed on that corner, but if you disconnected lines at the MC or the abs unit, or let the MC run dry while doing work, you'll have to do a more extensive/complicated bleeding procedure.
