4:10 Gears, What's So Great?

ok so my truck came with 4:10 gearing and i keep seeing threads mentioning switching to them or people bragging about them, but i have no idea why they are so great/not great?

 

anyone help me out?

 

 

(and yes, i searched but it gave me unrelated results and i wasn't sure which category to post this in)

They can put the power to the ground sooner. It gives the engine a greater mechanical advantage over the tires compared to a lower number gear ratio (3.73:1) which is technically a higher gear ratio... The mechanical advantage provided by the lower gear ratio (4.10:1) means the engine doesn't require as much effort to do the same work, more pulling power and higher rpm's. It makes towing, and hauling, some off road situations and brisk take offs better, at the expense of highway fuel economy due to the higher rpms.

You get much better acceleration and pulling torque with them. The 4.10 gear is kind of the lowest gear everyday people will use for everyday use. I wouldn't mind myself having 4.56 gears but I'd never go any higher than 4.10. My old truck had 3.42 which sucked for anything but getting good MPG's and 3.73 are decent but still not quite enough sometimes. 4.10 gears are just a great all around gear. Good for pulling and still half decent on your fuel mileage.

Agreed....I switched my 16" inch wheels to 17" Hummer H2's, which, of course, required larger tires. Effectively, it changed my 4.10 to about 3.80 or there abouts. This created a noticeable difference when towing my 5th wheel....not terrible, but certainly noticeable.

 

I bought a Diable Predator to fix the speedometer error and add a bit of lost power...it runs much better unloaded and I am hoping the pulling power will come back, or at least some of it...we'll see.

whats the length and weight of your 5th wheel?how does the 6.0 handle the rv?reason i ask is were going to get a tt probably 26 ft max and was wandering what to expect,got out of rving in 03 had a 31 cardinal double slide 5th wheel and towed it with a 01 dodge dually cummins,sure do miss rving

What the number is acutally telling you is how many times the driveshaft turns for every one turn of the rear axles. So like the other guys were saying the higher the number the faster the engine runs in the same distance. Imagine it like a ten speed bike. 4.10 gears are like taking off in 2nd or 3rd gear. Really easy and lots of power but not much top speed. Whereas a lower axle like 3.23 is like 5th or 6th on a bicycle and will take longer to get going but has more top speed and you pedal slower to maintain a cruise. For a truck that gets worked by pulling a higher number rear axle gives you more engine power in each gear, but uses them up quicker. So you can get a lot of wieght going because your engines power is used to accelerate a shorter distance than with the lower number gears. For a economy car you want gears that give you the lowest engine speed at cruise, but it takes a while for the engine to build up speed because the engine speed goes farther in MPH for each gear and once your moving it's at a lower RPM. Then you don't have as much pull or acceleration rate due to the wider spread between MPH and RPM. In stop and go 4.10 get up and go quicker and pull faster but on the highway 3.73's have a lower engine speed and therefore better fuel economy.

My truck came with 3.83 gears and I hate them. If I knew what it had when I bought it I probably would not have. I would much rather have had 4.10 for the little bit extra low end power

Yeah, mine has 4:10's and my dad's d-max has 3:73's and I definetly like the 4:10's better for power. The milage sucks, but the ease the the truck puts power to the ground is well worth it. I've never driven a d-max with 4:10's but it would probably just be rediculous...

I'm not sure about the current models but the D-Max was not available with 4:10's stock. 3:73 was it. Could it be too that adding 4:10's to a D-Max might elevate rpm's a bit high considering the torque and power characteristics of the engine? Anyone done this? What were the results?

Diesel's dont get 4.10 gears cause they redline at 3600 rpm, you wouldnt be able to go to fast at highway speeds and the motor would be redlined on the tach, even the new 6 speed trannys are not all the hipe that they are, the differance bewteen 5 and 6 gear is only about 200 rpm. Diesels make there power at low rpm verses gas motors and not high revers, you could be driving down the road at say 40mph hit the pedal and the tranny drops down a gear and it would be redlined going just about no where with the 4.10 gears.

Ford and Dodge both offer 4.10's with their deisels. Ford also offers up to a 4.88, or at least did with their 6.8L V10.

In order to compare apples to apples you need to look at the total drivetrain including transmission, rear axle ratio and wheel-tire size. While Ford and Dodge offer taller rear end gears, they may also have smaller gears in the transmission to make up for it.

 

You can think of each gear as a torque multiplier and the radius of the wheel+tire as a torque divider. In the new 6speed transmission, 1st gear is around 4:1 and with a rear end of 4.1 :1 that means that the torque produced by the engine is multiplied by 16 and of course divided by the radius to produce the effective to the ground torque.

 

The final drive in the transmisson is .65:1 which makes the overall drive equal to 2.6. The older 4speed has a .72 OD and coupled with a 3.73 produces a final drive of 2.79 so in theory, if you put the same 6.0L engine on either drivetrain it should produce close to the same RPM and same MPG.
