2001 Tahoe Lt 4x4

The ABS and Brake light came on at the same time. I pulled off the road to perform visual check. Brake fluid ok, I do not notice any change in the brakes. Checked brake pads to all 4 wheels when I got home. All ok. The lights come on and off at times. I did notice that I can shift without applying the brakes. I know that you are not supposed to be able to shift without first applying the brakes. Any suggestion into what possible causes of warning lights would be helpful. I am handy with performing several basic repairs. I would like to check myself or at least try to repair before resorting to dealer.

its probably the brake saftey sensor...the thing that makes you have to put your brakes on before shifting...i broke it and my brake light came on...thats in a 97 tahoe tho

I get it in my 2001 Z71. I thought it might have something to do with my maxing out my torsion bars, but it hasn't done it since I put my new rotors on my truck.
