Brake Controlers

If you are talking diesel I would say GM and Dodge are about the best options right now for Diesel 3/4s. GM has done pretty well. with meeting the emmesion standards for 2008 with the least amount of problems, Dodge has only seen a few problems with the DPF filters. Ford is still battleing there Navstar setup.

I agree with BOSS302, the Prodigy.

I had a Voyageur (still have it...sitting in the drawer), but wasn't fussy about the one led that changes colour.

The prodigy has a readout that actually tells you the voltage level going to the breaks, with a 'boost' button to instantly increase the stopping force in situations when you want it.

I had a prodigy in my Tahoe and loved it. Now I have the GM integrated Controller and really love it. There is also one called BrakeSmart that places a pressure transducer in the brake line and modulates the electric brakes in the trailer according to how much brake you are applying. There are a few people on some RV forums that swear by it (and at it too) There is also another controller, Jordan where you attach a cable to your brake pedal and the controller sends a proportional signal to the TT brakes. If you have ever driven a rig with the old hydraulic to electric brake controllers you know that the inertia style controllers (prodigy etc) are just not the same, and those people migrate to the Jordan as it is the closest to the old style controller - aside from the BrakeSmart and the factory built-ins.

My preference is Jordan's Ultima 2020. Used to have a Tekonsha on my Suburban but it was terrible. Worst thing: try to put the hazard lights on while you climb a long hill. The whole truck would pulsate as the brake controller applied pressure each time it saw the power come on in my truck's tail lights...

Switched to the 2020 about 8 years ago. Put it into the 05 without hesitation. Have not looked back. It does exactly what you expect. You press the pedal, it applies brake pressure to the trailer, in direct proportion to how hard you press the pedal.

Went from Voyager to prodigy. Both work great, but I like how the Prodigy tells you if you are connected or not. Saved my butt when my plug corroded and I had no brakes.
