stillen Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 I have a 2001, gmc, sierra, 5.7, ext cab, Z71... I am looking for a used plow setup. I dont care if its a boss, fischer, myers, etc.....My truck has the tow package with the tranny cooler..... My question is, I see all these used plow on craigs list and the local "want ads". Can I adapt most of these plows for my truck as long as I can buy or find the correct push plates?.... I've been told to stay away from the pulley over hydralic operated plows, and go with an electric over hydrolic..... Any suggestions, and yes, as always im on a budget... Thanks Mike
unit731 Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 Any 4WD can plow. Did your truck come with the Plow Prep Package?
sonjaab Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 Mike............You won't have any problem mounting a plow to your truck. As far as choice a Western or Fisher straight blade no larger than 8 ft. would be my choice. Used/new parts are reasonable and easy to find. These are also simple units........................... Just use caution when buying and look for a used unit came off the same or similar year truck. Parts are pricey ! A new push bar (mounting carton) is $500. Wiring harnesses are $250 a pop and your gonna need 2 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So that cheap plow that came off a Ford or mopar is gonna cost ya $1000 bucks in parts to make it work on your GM ! If you find a used plow unit check the "plow match" feature on their web sites to see if the wiring harnesses and mount will work on your truck. Good luck...............geo Check out http://www.letstalksnow.com/forums for more help/info.
topdj Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 he's got a good point a used one can cost a lot once you add up the extra parts Thats why I bought a new plow " light duty" you may want a standard duty plow as the light duty ones dont have the weight for anything other than personal use. Im already considering trading my plow in for a regular duty version of the same brand it won't require anything but droping off one and driving away with another, other than more $$ check out www.PLOWSITE.com too
