May Be Coming Back To The Fold......

Elwood 2000

Been a while since I have visited and nearly a year since I have been "Chevy-less".

The Jeep is a wonderful vehicle, but it does have it's place. I am in need of a new "work truck" and I found a truck that fits the bill perfectly, but has a few more miles than what I really like.

Here are the details:

1999 Chevy K2500 (C/K series), standard cab, 8 foot bed. 5.7, auto, push button 4x4, LS package, power windows, locks, cruise, cd, trailer/tow etc. Gray cloth interior, dark green paint. Although this truck looks like it has only 60k on the clock, it does have 160,000. Supposedly the engine was replaced with a GM Crate 5.7 at just over 100k miles.

While I would prefer a 454, the 350 will due and the quality of this truck is head and shoulders above anything else I have looked at. Well worth having a 350 instead of 454. At any rate, I have not had a truck as nice as this/worth this much with this many miles. What other issues may arise soon or maybe should have been addressed? CV joints in the front end? Other front end components? Will the 4L80E (I assume this is the auto in it) last for quite a while longer? Transfer case too? What about brake components (master cylinder, ABS components, etc.)? The Corp 14 bolt in the rear and the Corp. 10 bolt up front don't bother me much. If those are actual miles on the 350, that doesn't bother me much either. This truck runs and drives VERY well, not nearly like what the miles show.

While I probly won't work this truck very hard, I do require that it be reliable as I will be in it almost every day. I don't want to constantly have the truck in the shop with higher $$$ items every month. I know, a truck with these miles will have smaller issues from time to time, but the larger ticket items do concern me.

I feel the asking price is a fair start at $6700 and he claims very little "wiggle room", but I will see how far he will go.

Your thoughts??

Thanks so much!!

I had to do a master cylinder on my Caddy at 180K... I'm sure being a GM product they have similar projected durabilities. I'd alos bet the tranny is on its last leg. Beyond that it will likely nickel and dime you to death. (The reason I bought a new truck, I don't have a lot of pocket change.)

I'd ask for some info on the new engine, like receipts and what not. I'd be a bit more than upset if I bought the truck and the engine was in fact the original. If it has the 4l80, they are much more stronger than the 4l60, but with that many miles it might need a rebuild.

The tranny would be the only major thing I'd be concerned with, but then again, I've seen many original transmissions go over 300k with no problems.

My 1995 now has about 171k miles, I bought it with 152k. Had the tranny (a 4L60E, not 4L80E) replaced at about 158k, reverse wouldn't engage but everything else still worked perfectly. Other than that, I've had ZERO problems with it since I've had it, unless you count a dead battery and a few burnt bulbs... knock on wood.

I think that could be a reliable truck. You mentioned that you aren't going to work it very hard. Maybe you could get a halfton that is newer with less miles. Just a thought.

Thanks for the replies.

My reason for a 2500 is that on occasion, I will haul or tow a decent load. More than a half ton would want for about 30 miles or so. I have considered a half ton several times, but I don't want to be stuck not being able to do what work I need to do on that rare occasion.

I am going to look again today, I will ask for more documentation on the engine and hopefully, see some sort of service records.

More later....

Thanks
