Drive Shaft.

Just wondering when they went with the HUGE Drive shaft. I looked under my truck today and was like OMG that is huge. I know I have never seen one this big.

It is aluminum? thought it was steel (i think i remember reading a thread a while back)

yup....they dont all have the alum d-shafts.

 

My 2000 Z71 had the alum d-shaft and my 2005 CC had the alum d-shaft, while my dads 2001 extcab and my friends 2001 regcab have steel d-shafts. All with the 5.3L engine. I cant find a rhyme or reason as to how they decide what gets the alum d-shaft.

I believe they used an aluminum driveshaft in crew cabs (at least up to '06 model year) to eliminate the need for the driveshaft support bearing. Aluminum shafts, although bulkier in appearance, are lighter than steel shafts.

 

I was surprised that my '06 crew cab does not have a two piece driveshaft with a support bearing, as my '95 extended cab Nissan pickup had one.

VERY STUPID Question, how the hell do I tell if it is aluminum or steel (or should I just post pics and let ya'll tell me)
