Nudged A Tree Today. Tree: 1, Gmt900: 0

Started off the day on the wrong side of the truck this morning. Backing out of the garage, negotiating a tight backing turn to miss the RV as usual and just barely tapped a sweet gum on the edge of the garage tarmac. :M16: Jumped out and sure enough I had turned the RR bumper up and under slightly and in the process bumped that quarter edge in and in front of, the tailgate right side edge. I yanked on the bumper by hand and it yielded enough to put a little daylight between the bumper plastic trim and the painted quarter panel. Good news: not one scratch on painted surfaces; chrome piece and black plastic of bumper assembly uncreased; tail light lens unscathed. Bad news can't open tailgate without causing damage to it or the painted surface of quarter panel adjacent to it. LOCKED THE TAILGATE to avoid damage.

Busy day and all the while the first incident in my new truck was handing in the back of my mind. Got a break late this afternoon and had a delivery to a good body shop customer and showed him the boo boo. He glanced at it and said come back Monday, I've got a bumper bracket. He said all he had to do is take that side of the bumper off; tap the quarter over with a piece of wood; replace the bracket; bolt the bumper "trim" back on. Whew! He also said that if I hadn't yanked the bumper back a little it would have vibrated against the quarter and then surely required paint.

I've nudged this tree a few times in my '95 GMT400 twice as hard and never looked back. It has a real bumper and not trim in the shape of a bumper. So disappointing.

I am absolutely crazy about my GMT900 but I must say, that rear bumper is about as sorry of an excuse for protection as I can imagine. It could only be made more useless by constructing it from glass.

Yes, the sweet gum is coming down tomorrow.

Oh sure, drive like a woman and then blame the truck and the tree...LOL J/K :D

Right! And I suppose you don't feel pretty driving that Sierra? :M16:

That looks like a stout one! Gonna give it a try without the sweet gum for awhile. If that don't work then I'll try a little "Mad Max from Thunderdome." :M16:

That reminds me of when someone hit my parked truck ('04 ext. cab rado) in the front bumper on the side. It pushed the bumper down and in. Thought I would need a new bumper but to my surprise I was able to pull it back to shape by hand. :D Just have a slight scratch hardly visible. Never dreamed it would be that flimsy. Speaking of flimsy, how about the roof sheet metal? Talk about paper thin. I went thru a high pressure car wash an almost went deaf from the roof vibrating. :):D

Bummer

I know what you mean about the differences in bumpers, my dads GMT-800 3500 Dually has lighter bumpers then my '98 1500. I am sure this is a weight savings and cost cutting thing by GM to make the trucks more economical and fuel efficient.

The '06 CC I had would drive me crazy when I slammed the doors. That roof panel would vibrate like crazy! They reversed the indentations in the NBS roof panels...much better.

If it weren't for the molded reinforcement ridges in the roof, I think it would oilcan from heavy breathing. Honestly, my tree hugging this morning was at about 1/4 mph. :D

You bring up some good points... When did GM stop making TRUCKS and start making tinfoil truck substitutes? Dammit... for the money we are paying for these trucks you'd think we could at least have bumpers and beds that didn't bend if you step on them.

I think it is because 90% of the buyers buy them as "cars"... therefore the Buick interiors and guys posting complaints because they can hear a rattle somewhere if they drive with the windows up, AC off, and radio turned down...

WHAT KIND OF GIRLS ARE TRUCK BUYERS BECOMING?

It MIGHT be ok if my new truck didn't get WORSE gas mileage than my old one did.

I'm gonna go kick my dog.

i don't normally go for the 'heavy duty cast iron' bumper look ... but after standing on the bumper of mine for a bit and feeling it flex to my weight ... it looks like the bumpers will be changed out for sure ...

i don't even think i can push someone with my truck without damaging something up front ... i could push other people in my neon no problem ...

    • I tried tapping it.  This might sound like a dumb question, you should feel vibration or some type of noise when it turns on? Can someone please verify? Thank you all!
    • I feel better now for my own view point and actions or lack there of towards the dealership service theme reading your post and others. GM corporate is who offers the two free oil changes on the HD trucks and I bought my truck in Feb of 2025 and those oil change offers run out within 2 years I believe and I highly doubt I will be using either one of them. I had asked if I could officially give those free services to another customer ( a friend ) and they said no, its all a GM corporate thing based on the vehicle in question. What that service advisor did however was go into a little story about how such and such customer was denied engine warranty because he had done his own oil changes because then they are not documented ... you see where that goes and so an employee playing the game of scaring the customer into having the service work done there most certainly triggered my thought process. At a later date I did talk to the person who handles warranty claims at the dealership and she said to be sure to document the oil changes and keep receipts for the oil and filter ( coped the receipts from cases of Mobil oil and case of filters I bought from them ) and the vehicles VIN, the date of service, mileage etc and staple that together as a record I would give them if that was ever needed and I keep my own log book for services for each vehicle as well. Oh and about 8 months after I bought the truck the dealer starts calling me to offer a maintenance service since they haven't seen my vehicle show up on their system ... for the mere fee of 300.00 Canadian to change the oil and rotate the tires and a few other minor checks and I declined the offer, I get the call again a couple of months later for the same thing and she could tell I was not interested and she asked if they should take my name off the call list and I said yes, do that !.    By the way did you happen to keep your factory oil filter to open it up and see the surprises inside as I expect some will show up as per the odd little sliver of metal shaving and particles that the filter does trap along with bits of grey silicone sealer that come off of the inside edge of mating surfaces. I have cut open every filter so far on my truck although few miles but have changed the oil often and the second filter was vastly better with very little of anything, that first filter was the unsettling one as I expected it would be.
    • I get why they do this…but man…not ideal. I only extract on inboard boat engines because the drains are buried and even then I hate it because it’s easy to leave a quart behind with that method.   They should market it as an “oil refresh” not oil change!
    • I only get oil changed where I can watch. Valvoline pulls through the dipstick into a see thru glass. When done they show me the dipstick. About the only way they can mess up is using the wrong oil. But that secret wouldn’t stay secret long. Honda uses TQ wrenches on everything. You can watch through a plate glass window. Discount tires does that with tires. Trust but verify.
    • I would not argue that with you. It would be pointless to argue against the truth and you speak the truth.    My question and in fact the entire point of this thread is an exploration into the levers of wear which happens no matter how well we maintain our powertrains.    Some of these levers we exert a good deal of influence over which can and do result is lower wear, longer powertrain life. Some others we are sort of stuck with.    An engine is typically done when the ring to bore seal no longer is able to do the job effectively. Normally the first thing to go in a engine otherwise well maintained and adult driven is this seal.    Looking into the means, methods, products and attitudes that influence the rate of wear seems a worthwhile inquiry to me.
