Stock Air Intake On A 2k Tahoe

I just picked up my 2K Tahoe last month. This is the first Chevy truck I've owned (I'm really liking it too). In looking under the hood I have a question about the configuration of the air intake tube. It flattens out and extends over the radiator shroud. I assume that is to compensate for the narrowing of the tube so it can pass behind the shroud. Between the wide/flat section and the air box it also extends down quite a bit where it has a larger compartment on it. Did that make sense? If it did, can anyone tell me what the point of this downward extension of the air intake tube does?

Thanks,

I replaced my stock tube from my '04 silverado with an airaid tube. It has added some engin noise but its an eight cylnder and it is supposed to have some noise... I like it.

When I put on an airraid tube several years ago, I was surprised how big the factory air intake was.

Truck sounds better now. :D

Patrick you are right. The OE set up does take up some serious space. In addition to the better sound, I simply like the way an aftermarket tube like an Airaid or TrueFlow cleans up things under the hood.

the filters are very good on all the systems that have been mentioned. However, they do not seal off any heat that is generated by the engine. Your systems are classified as CAI, cold air intake systems. But they are not. there are only a few truly cold intake systems. GM makes one for the GM900 new style trucks, and Volant come to mind. Ifyou are going ot upgrade to a CAI, make sure you get a true CAI and not one that allows hot engine temp to go directly to the air filter

Thanks for the feedback guys. I put an AirRaid CAI on my 2K Durango (it was totaled last month, replaced with the Tahoe). It gave me a 2 mpg boost and a little better throttle response. I heard the argument about the CAI's actually being heat suckers. On the Durango I pulled the flap from the front of the engine compartment that went between the radiator and the fender. With that gone the air came straight through the grill to the filter. At an idle it would still suck hot air but at highway speeds the air would be moving too fast to be warmed up, IMHO, so at that point the air it's breating is whatever the ambient temp is, plus, it's hitting the filter at whatever your ground speed is. I was looking for improved mileage so I got what I was after. In looking at CAI's for the 'Ho the AirRaid looked like it might not be as straight a shot as the K&N. If and when I get one I think I'll go with the K&N this time.
