rangerhgm Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 I've got a 2007 GMC Sierria 1500 4x4 and would like to get an extra key made to carry in my wallet. On my old truck (1999 GMC 1500 Sierra) I got one made and trimmed the plastic top off it so it would fit in my wallet better. It worked perfectly. I was at Sears the other day and was going to have them make a copy. They checked my key and said it had a chip in it and if they copied it, it could damage my truck if I used it. Anybody gotten spares made for this truck? Where? Any problems using the spare? Thanks
MS3DALE Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 Your key does have a resistor chip in it. The dealer or any good locksmith should have keys,I don't think places like Sear's or Wal-Mart have them yet. Once you get a new one cut you then have to program it to your truck.....Just start your truck with an original key, then shut it off and remove the original key, insert the new key and start the truck, your done.

Well MS3DALE is right, most places like that will not have the needed key. If you go to a locksmith you will be looking at around 75 dollars for a key to be made with the resistor in it. The plastic piece can not be removed on these keys b/c the resistor will then be removed. The most valuable piece of advise I can give is to search eBay. I purchased a resistor key for my silverado, my dads Tahoe and my brothers F-150 all for like 45 dollars. Every keys worked, you just bring it to any store and just have them copy your key. I just have mine hidden under my truck, since it wont fit in my wallet, that way if I lock my wallet in also then I still have a way to get in and start it. If you would like the seller that I purchased mine from just pm me and I'll look it up. Much cheaper that way.

Ranger Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 They can cut the key with the right setup, but they may not have the original blank with the resistor. That is my understanding anyways. I've seen blanks on ebay from 10 to 60 bucks.
dsmazz Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 I got a key off eBay for $14. Then I drove all over heck and back to every hardware, building center, and locksmith in the area. Not one business would touch it because it had a transponder. And, because I bought elsewere, other than a dealer, none of the dealers in town would cut the key either. (Selling dealer where I bought my truck was a 45 minute drive away.) Finally, I found a hardware store that would cut the key, but made me sign a waiver, in case they ruined either key, I would not hold them responsible. Well, the original key works fine. The new key, only locks/unlocks the doors and the tailgate. It will not turn in the ignition. But that's OK, because all I wanted it for was to unlock the doors.
LAGA Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 I got 3 keys off off ebay. I just walked into the closest dealer to me and asked them to cut them and I would program them myself. They said sure and cut them on the spot.

They said sure and cut them on the spot. I did the same thing - bought a couple of keys from eBay, went to a dealer and had them cut. I went out to my truck and programmed them myself. When the parts guy was done cutting my keys, he told me that these keys were softer than the normal GM keys. He could tell because his key cutting machine normally jumps around cutting GM keys. The machine went though these keys like butter. If I used these keys as my everyday keys, they would wear down faster. I have these keys hidden and will only use them as back ups. Phil
unit731 Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 My local hardware (chain) did not have blank even for just lock/unlock door. I'll keep looking. I already have one spare from dealership. Cut and programed for $32.00. Need and extra, extra, key though.
d3athsong Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Any locksmith can cut you a key to open the door, just dont use it in the ignition. Should cost 3-4 $.

rangerhgm Posted January 16, 2008 Author Posted January 16, 2008 I contacted a local locksmith and he said he can make a dupe ignition for $45 and a spare to just unlock the door for $4.
WFO Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 I just order some at the local hardware store that I work at $20.00 cut for a transponder key. The key that we got in were made by ilco #B111-PT and were not a GM key but worked just like the GM key.
Mikeee Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 I always thought that the chipped key came in a number of resistor values and I had to have the VIN to get the right resistor value. Do I understand NOW that ANY resistor key will work as long as the cut works the lock pins? Then what is the point of different resistor values?
