What Action to Take

GM Engineering is attempting to determine the root cause of the above condition. GM Engineering has a need to obtain information first hand during diagnosis and BEFORE repair. As a result, this information will be used by engineering to "root cause" the customer’s concern and develop/validate a field fix.

Instructions

If a vehicle is encountered with the above concern, please do the following steps:

  1.
Record the VIN.
Record the vehicle build date.
Record the mileage at the time of service.
Record the vehicle paint code and color.
Photograph the paint concern.
E-mail the pictures to [email protected]

GM bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, NOT a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform these technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions, and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See your GM dealer for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.

with 6.6L Duramax® Diesel Engine (VINs 1, 2, D, 6 -- RPOs LB7 (CA Emissions), LLY, LBZ, LMM)

An EGR Cooler Pressure Tester Adapter Set, EN-48974, was shipped essential to dealers in December 2007 to diagnose EGR cooler leaks on all Duramax engines equipped with an EGR system. This adapter set is designed to be used with J-46091-1 - Charge Air Cooler Tester Regulator to pressurize the EGR cooler with shop air and monitor for leakage.

Important: Leaks from the EGR cooler may allow coolant to pass through the exhaust system and enter the combustion chambers on the right bank cylinders. Failure to inspect the EGR cooler for leaks may lead to a misdiagnosis for coolant in the combustion chamber.

  1.

EN-48974 -- EGR Cooler Pressure Tester Adapter Set

  1.
544259 (2 Qty) 19 mm (3/4 Inch) Hose Clamps
EN-48974-3 (Qty 1) 19 mm (3/4 Inch) EGR Cooler Hose Adapter
EN-48974-4 (Qty 1) 19 mm (3/4 Inch) Cap Plug
544258 (2 Qty) 15.9 mm (5/8 Inch) Hose Clamps
EN-48974-1 (Qty 1) 15.9 mm (5/8 Inch) EGR Cooler Hose Adapter
  2. EN-48974-2 (Qty 1) 15.9 mm (5/8 Inch) Cap Plug

If an investigation of loss of coolant leads to coolant found in one or multiple cylinders on the right bank, test the EGR cooler for leakage before attempting any repairs. The cylinders affected will depend on which exhaust valves are open at the time of engine shutdown.

  1.
Partially drain the engine coolant to allow EGR cooler hose removal.
Install the end cap and clamp of EN-48974 - EGR Cooler Pressure Tester Adapter Set to one of the EGR cooler hose barbs and install the pressure tester adapter hose and clamp to the other EGR cooler hose barb. Important: SOME J-46091-1 REGULATORS MAY BE PRESET AT 30 PSI WITH THE ADJUSTING KNOB RIVETED IN PLACE. THE RIVET HEAD MUST BE DRILLED OUT WITH A 5/16" DRILL BIT BEFORE ADJUSTMENT. DO NOT DRILL MORE THAN 1/8" IN DEPTH, OR JUST ENOUGH TO REMOVE THE RIVET HEAD. THE RIVET SHAFT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE REMOVED FROM THE REGULATOR.

Back off the regulator on J-46091-1 - Charge Air Cooler Tester Regulator by turning counterclockwise until it stops.
Connect J-46091-1 - Charge Air Cooler Tester Regulator to EN-48974 - EGR Cooler Pressure Tester Adapter Set, and connect shop air to J-46091-1.
Open the shutoff valve, then slowly turn the regulator on J-46091-1 clockwise until the gauge reads 15 psi.
  2. Shut off the valve on J-46091-1 and monitor the gauge for leak down. Replace the EGR cooler if it does not hold pressure.

This PI was Superceded to update Recommendation/Instructions. Please discard PIP4303.

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Customer may comment on 4x4 being inoperative stating that the transfer case will shift but the front axle will not pull. Technicians may find the front axle shift collar broken.

Recommendation/Instructions:

Engineering is conducting a investigation and at this time needs your assistance in gathering more information into the circumstances that may have led to the above condition. Please fill out the below questionnaire and contact GM technical assistance at the number you have been provided.

  1.
Have the torsion bars been adjusted?
What was the approximate frequency of 4WD engagement? Once a day? Once a month?
Was there an audible noise at the time of the failure?
Under what condition did the 4WD fail? A. Was it already engaged when failure occurred?

    1. Did failure occur at higher speeds/ on highway?

    2. Did failure occur at low speeds / mud, snow?

    B. Did it fail during engagement?

    1. Failure during attempted higher speed engagement?

    2. Failure during low speed engagement / mud, snow?

Was the customer towing, hauling a load or was a snow plow attached?
  2. Is there anything else about the vehicle or the circumstances of the axle failure that may be useful to an engineering investigation?

Engineering is still investigating the cause of the broken shift collar. It is not considered to be the result of abuse, and should be repaired under warranty. At this time repair or replace the axle in the most cost effective way. This PI will be updated after the investigation is completed.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
