Tune it!!!

I'm really scared of tuning it because of the warranty. What are you going to get? And is it a seperate computer or do you send your stock one.

I bought a second set of modules (ECM/TCM), I am going to keep the stock ones for warranty purposes. Nelson will tune a set for me and send them and I will return my second set. He will also supply the cores, but I found them cheaper. Also, check his website, he has a cool exchange system that works kinda like NetFlix. He sends you the tuned modules and you have 14 days to send back the old ones. No downtime. Even if you have a planned dealer visit, call him and he can send you a set of stock-tuned modules and you simply swap them and return them when your done. Also, the dealer cannot tell you have a tune and if they reflash your computer, Nelson will retune it for free. (you pay $10 shipping).

Check it out!

Oh, and if you really want top-notch, get a Laptop with HPTuners and he can e-mail tunes to you. You can also load a stock tune whenever you want too. But this will cost quite a bit more.

Laptop $$$??

HPTuners $500 or $650 for "Pro" version.

Nelson Tune $375.

I may do this in a year or so, I'll decide after I get the tune and see how much "tweaking" I end up doing to see if it would be worth it or not. Would be kinda fun though!!!

VMax, I'm sorry, but I'm a complete noob when it comes to this :dunno:. So you bought 2 computers (ecm/tcm), BUT you still have your stock 2 computers for going to the dealer.

"Nelson will tune a set for me and send them and I will return my second set." They are going to send you 2 tuned computers and your going to send your stock ones back??

And what is a core.

haha sorry dude first truck ever owned

No problem, I probably was not very clear. Nelson has cores (ECM/TCM unprogrammed computers). He will tune a set for you for $375 and send them to you. You then have 14 days to return a set to him. Either your stock ones or another set. If you do not want to send your stock ones back and do not have another set, you can buy them from him for an additional $380 for both the ECM and TCM. I found a better deal than $380 and got a set for $250. So, I am buying a tune from Nelson for $375, and the ECM/TCM cores cost me an add'l $250. This way I can keep the ECM/TCM that is in my truck currently (stock) for dealer visits. But you really do not need to keep your stock ones since he will send you a set of stocked tuned ones anytime, you only pay the shipping costs. This does mean that you will need to wait a few days for them to arrive though. I only did it because to me, $250 is worth the "peace of mind" of knowing I have the stock/original computers that came with my truck. Just in case. I am like many, I do not want to risk warranty issues/hassles. I will probably even carry them with me in case my truck dies away from home and I need a tow to a dealer. I can simply swap them prior to even calling the Tow truck. Paranoid? Maybe, but better safe than sorry.

Ohh I get it now :dunno: . Thanks bud, btw, how was the Edge Evolution?

It was OK, but TM and Abuse Mode were still there and that "lag" when you step on the gas really pisses me off. Nelson will remove all TM and all Abuse Mode crap if you want him to. I am having him remove 80% TM and ALL Abuse Mode and the 4 sec PE Delay. I don't beat on my truck or race it, so I am not worried about blowing up the tranny. He told me with the 4L70E tranny I will be just fine as long as I don't beat on it regularly. If you want to race it, then Vette Servo's and a shift kit will help alot. But that would likely void your warranty. I will wait until my warranty runs out before doing those types of mods.

Check out his website and also check out: http://www.performancetrucks.net/forums/fo...splay.php?f=106

Lots of good info here.

That's a whole lot of cash vmax....hopefully it's worth it. IMO it won't be worth the difference between what you have now and what you're getting. Will it be better? Sure. Will it be $600 better? I highly doubt it....money is different to everyone though, I realize that.

I think I will just go with a Diablo Predator eventually.

check out wait4me tuners also. It s a mail in ecm/tcm custom tune like Nelson. A lot cheaper though. I think he s still doing tunes for $75 if you send your ecm/tcm in to him. He will talk to you on the phone and explain everything he s doing in your tune. Think they all do pretty much the same. They know what each other is changing in the ecm and there may be a slight difference in what they feels is best. Or you can buy another complete set of ecm/tcm (like Vmax) said and have your originals as a spare. I ve had tunes in my last two Silverados and never ran accross a warrenty problem when going into the dealer.I run mine once in a great while at the track and don t beat it up other than that. It just runs so much better with a tune.

$600? Where'd you come up with that number?

I sold my Edge for $275. So the upgrade is really only costing me $350 ($375 + $250 - $275 = $350).

The way I see it is I spent nearly $40K on a truck that I absolutely love, less the "Nannies" GM put in there. So why not spend a few hundred more to take away the one negative I have with it? Heck I spent over $2k on other accessories, and people spend a heck of a lot more than what I spent on this tune just putting an exhaust on. I'd say this money is way more well-spent.

I won't knock WFM since I do not have personal experience with them. But I have spent alot of time reading over at PerformanceTrucks.net and those guys are pretty serious motorheads over there. There are not too many over there that have many good things to say about Jesse Bubb. They all pretty much swear by Nelson and Wheatley. You know what they say, you get what you pay for. I have heard all you get with one of Jesse's (WFM) tunes is a "canned" tune that he simply loads onto a module and mails to you. He does not personally tune every person's truck based on individual needs and wants. In fact. I heard one guy saying he asked Jesse to remove TM and he said he would NOT do it. I have heard a WFM tune is basically the same thing as a handheld tuners "canned" tune.

But you are right, they are cheaper. I did alot of research and decided to spend the money and do it right this time. Just my .02 (or $350 in this case  )

theres not too much personnel tuning to do to a stock or nearly stock truck. Unless you start doing some serious mods other than intake and exhaust. Then that s where I d be looking for more options. What you call a CANNED TUNE is just what works best all around for a nearly stock truck. WFM can also change anything you request if you KNEW what you wanted specifically. I like to try another tune just to see if there is any noticable difference. Anyone want to buy me another tune and I ll let you all know?

    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
    • Correct.  2019-2021 model years are serviced by a different p/n.  19420611.  Recall 2021s use 19420611.   The recall engines 2022-2024 model years are serviced with 12740076.     The difference between 19420611 and 12740076 is GM changed injector size for 2022.  The injectors are smaller on 12740076 with smaller injector bores in the cylinder heads to match the smaller injectors.  So you can't install a 19420611 in a 2022-2024, and you can't install a 12740076 in a 2019-2021.     Both engines are the replacement engine p/ns that are in the L87 recall.  So both of these are the updated engines.     Here's a version of the L87 recall with the p/ns for all the parts needed.    RCRIT-25V274-7075.pdf   Note it shows 19420611 and 12740076 with an asterisk to a footnote "Use the VIN and the GM Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC) to determine which part to order if two or more part numbers are listed for the same part, as it may vary by vehicle options."
    • Looking for advice from this group. Took my flawless 2020 6.2 TB to an unnamed shop for routine rear brakes and oil change. Tech forgot to put oil back in after the full service and needles to say, destroyed my engine.  It’s all on their shop video so they are responsible.   I had my Chevy dealer do the analysis and they confirmed its compromised and said engine replacement. The manager said they only get GM reman engines from GM with full 3 yr warranty and the one they would put in is not same as what’s they are swapping out on 21-25 for recall.    I am looking for advice why that would be a different engine because obviously I had the good 6.2 year and replacing it has my concerns with that recall for 21-15   Also what’s the pros and cons of accepting the engine swap vs telling the shop that bricked the truck to pay up so I buy a new truck. I’m concerned about stigma resale eventually if I just decide to get rid of it after the swap or other issues showing up after the swap out.
    • Just looked up my records.  I've never gone over 5000 miles between oil changes.  At 46K miles, I have 10 oil changes.  I hope that will help.  I also installed the disabler last year.  I've still had a few times when it didn't seem to engage (which I can tell because the start stop feature kicks in), but for the most part, I think it's working.  For some reason, GM did not include the number of cylinders running in the information screen like I had on other models.  In my Cadillac, it shows me when it's running on 4 cylinders on the fuel milage screen.  I can't find that on my '21 Denali.
