2003 Sierra Brakes

I have been totally impressed with the brakes on my truck, It now has 145K and is still running the factory front brake pads,(and they still look good) and I did not have to replace the back (disc brakes) pads until the truck had 125K.

That is by far and away the best brake life I've ever gotten on a vehicle.

And to top it off I have pulled a 7K pound trailer all over the eastern half of the country.

Way to go GM!!!

My truck has been a complete SHOCK as well. 110K, 8 years old.... FACTORY pads/rotors... and still friggin' good! They did start pulsating slightly at about 100K, but it hasn't gotten any worse, I'm saving up for powerslots and "good" pads, they're $$$.

30K is a lot of miles per year!

Yeah, it has not been 30K every year though, I put 70K on in one year when I was driving from SC to Indiana every week.

you got REALLY FRICKING LUCKY WITH THAT, mine is a 03 and i have replaced the fronts twice from originals since new, the rears only once in 60,000 miles

yes it is impressive, my '01 Tahoe has 58K, and I keep looking at them...like new...I remember a couple of '97-'98s I had, brake eating machines, they were...

That`s beacuse you have an `03. That was the 1`st year for the updated clip for the park brake, and still has rear disk. Same for the `04`s. Drum brakes on the `05 and up suck. They grab, squeak and pulsate. Period.

I guess working at a gm dealership doesn`t count for $hit? Oh well.

Yeah, well at least my 06 sucked. The front pads were completely worn and the brake shoes for the drums were worn at 20,000 miles. And they would also pulsate and squeak loud. I had a 2003 Suburban and it was at 130,000 miles and they still had all the stock pads on the fronts and rears and they still had a lot of to go. The rotors were also good still.

I know in 2000 they had a "long life" brake option. My dad had 80K on his 00 Z71 and they werent even half gone. I have 40K on my 04 and it looks like iv never touched the brake pedal.

The brakes on the 05 and up, even though they have drums, are 10 times better than the disc rears of the past. I had an 04 silverado with rear disc brakes, and they were absolutely terrible. They didn't stop for shiot. I got an 05 with drums and they were infinately better at stopping, and now my 07 with drums have excellent brakes. This perception that rear discs are better than drums is complete BS IMO. I'll take drum brakes that can actually stop the vehicle any day. I got rid of my 04 because I was afraid I would rear end someone, they were terrible. Also the parking brake works way better with the drum brakes. I'm glad GM went to drums in the rear.

The reason your 2005 Silverado brakes better than your 2004 with disc is because in 2005 the front disc brakes got upgraded. It ain't the drum that makes your truck brake better. After all most braking comes from the front discs. If an 2004 Silverado had the same front brakes as an 2005 Silverado it would brakes better. One of the main reasons I got a V-Max was because of the rear disc, I can't stand the look of rear drum brakes. And my 2007 V-Max with rear disc brakes way better than my 2006 Silvy with front disc and rear drum brakes. Read about what changes in a truck before saying what is better. I rather have an 04 with rear disc than a 2006 and put better brakes than the stock brakes. I had an 2003 Suburban with rear disc brakes and it had 130,000 miles and the brakes still were good. On my 2006 my Silverado brakes sucked, the rear drum and front disc brakes were completely worn at 20,000 miles.

I believe you hit the nail right on the head when you said you like the LOOK of the rear dics better, and hate the site of drum brakes. That's a very common theme and it's not actually the brakes in question, it's the LOOK. Well I do know that most of your stopping power comes from the front, and they upgraded the fronts in 05. But plain old physics tells you that the more surface area you have for pad to rotor/drum contact you have, the better the stopping power, the whole reasoning behind oversized rotors. But rear drums have more surface contact than do discs, therefore the reason why the parking brake works much better on 05 and up trucks. The parking brake in the 04 was a joke. I'll go for brakes that work over the LOOKS anyday.

so I guess Chevy should start putting drums on the new ZR1 Corvette.

my y2k burb has front and rear discs....I have 72K miles on the clock and the pads and rotors are like new.

my '93 burb went thru front discs and pads every 20K miles....and that was with rear drums. Yes I know the front discs on the Y2k are much bigger than the '93, but I never thought the newer truck would have such good brake wear.

I go out of my way to get cars/trucks with front and rear discs. much easier to work on most of the time.

all of my racecars have front and rear discs....

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
