With the trouble I have with Windows, I definitely do not want anything with Microsoft in my car.

Cool, that would sure come in handy for using HP Tuners software!!! Even if you don't do the tuning yourself, Allen could e-mail tunes right to your truck's e-mail address and then you just load them.

Maybe it's the IT nerd in me but I love the idea. If you could pull wireless from cell phone towers for internet access I'd like it even more. I'm sure the safety nazis will prevent that though, in order to prevent streaming movies/videos while driving. Not to mention checking this forum while doing 80 on the highway.

I'll stick with my laptop in my car... at least that way I get to choose what I run. I use mine all day everyday in my Explorer company sled.

 

As far as Windows go... My network has 54 PCs running WinXP Pro and 2 Dell Servers running Server 2003 R2 and it runs smoothly month after month 24/7 without issue. I'm not saying nobody ever had an issue with Microsoft... just that I think they deserve the success they get if they are willing to put the effort in to produce a product that obviously almost everybody wants.

 

I love capitalism.... Those who work get the benefits and those who don't get nothing! I love it!

 

Linux is slowly gaining ground though... Just might become a good competitor yet. Dell and others are shipping machines with Linux loaded. Competition is a good thing...for sure

Thats the whole thing. People dont hate Windows, they hate Microsoft. I couldnt be happier with Vista.

 

And alot of places do have wireless internet that is possible to use when driving(someone else driving preferably). They span your normal driving are. Just wont work so well for those long road trips.

My users are pretty disciplined. I'm not saying there isn't the occasional hiccup (usually user generated) but we have had excellent luck. Staying away from some of the popular "third party" apps has proven a good move too.

 

But... I have hell with anything ADP.

we tried out X Serve and it has handled really well, the main problem for us is the limited apps that can be used with this setup....so in a way, we have to use windows via VMware Fusion, but Server 2003 can get glitchy sometimes on VMware Fusion.

I thought last year or the year before Ford was offering an option to have a tough notebook in the center console with all the charging accessories and a printer all fitting in that one space. Seems to me that something that was stuck in the truck would be worthless to anyone out on jobs. If you wanted to show someone your screen you would have to let them in your truck. Might be neat for playing with, but not practical IMHO.

I agree. Even letting one person in to look at the screen is limiting.

I have 6 Servers, Domain Controller, Mail Server, Citrix Server, Database Server, File Server, Web Server and 75 Users, and have no problems with MS Servers. Users are locked down tight, and we filter all web access. We have no problems b/c users can't screw with anything. I think MS Servers / Software gets a bad name from people who don't know what they are doing messing with it on their machines, and not keeping up with maintenance etc. Linux is better, but MS has cornered the market for small to mid sized businesses with Exchange, SharePoint, SQL Server. I don't want another computer, much less one in my truck, in fact when I leave work I don't want to see another computer!!! Would consumers like it, yes, would consumers screw it up, yes, would it get a bad name b/c of this, yes.
