Evap Vent Valve Solenoid #

Recommended Posts

Hey all. long time reader, first time posting and wanted to add another thumbs up for the A/C Delco part# in this thread.

My truck is a 99 Sierra Z71 5.3l and the newer valve, although bigger fit right in the original position with only a minor tweek of the bracket. Not only that, but even the hose fit on just like the stock one.

Props to everyone here ahead of time for all the monies your gonna save me. :smash:

I replaced my evap vent solenoid and I am still getting the P0442 code, anyone have any suggestions? I havent cleared the code to see if it will comes back but im guessing my next step is an EVAP smoke test.

Also this may be my problem, when I replaced the solenoid I broke the lock clip that connects to the EVAP canister. Does anyone have a part number for this? The lock clip is on the white fitting in this photo.

I have a 2005 Colorado with a 3.5 engine. Will this work on it also? Same frame as a Silverado.

Ok then... First let me appologize for using the word LYING. Lack of education was more the correct term. Now let's look at this with some common sense....$24.04 for the FACTORY ORIGIONAL part that came with the vehicle, or $150.78 for a modified replacement part to accomplish the same purpose, and which requires additional parts, and is more labor intensive on the installer, and which WILL NOT CORRECT ANY PROBLEM CAUSED BY OVERFILLING THE FUEL TANK AND PURGING GAS INTO THE SELONOID. Yes I might agree, this new part, because of the new location of the filter box, might be better for the 4X4 enthusiest, who will be going through mud, and dirt, and water. But guess what??? That truck owner is headed for more problems than just an evap selonoid down the road, because those conditions, will cause a whole lot of part failures, not just the evap system.....More common sense, the reality of this situation, is that, the origional part was mass produced, on hundreds of thousands of vehicles. Millions actually. Then GM has to go back to the manufacturer, and ask them to redesign the part to overcome issues that their own engineers created, and guess who is paying the tab for that??? Thats right, we are. The loyal GM buyer, who has put all of our faith, and trust, into a manufacturer, to build the best quality product available to us in today's market. The reality of it is. That redesigned part, should be on your shelf, for the same $24.04 as the origional part, and Gm should be counting their blessings on every truck that comes in after the warranty, that the owner has to pay for the part, since the most common mileage for the failure is @ 40K, and nothing prior to 07 is warrantied that long....And as far as the theory of "because the computer says so" Trust me, following that logic will not set you above the competition. Get the computer fixed.Get the TSB fixed. That TSB should call for the new modified part on trucks that frequently experience extreme driving conditions through water, mud, or extremely dusty area's, and that failed with the P0446 code, since that is the code that will be set when the system has become partially or fully clogged by substances being sucked into that vent filter. Overfilled tanks with gas purging through the selonoid will set the P0449 code, which is an electrical malfunction of that solenoid, not supplying the correct voltage information back to the pcm as designed. Granted P0449 could be the result of other electrical issues pertaining to the evap system, but for the failed solenoids with that code, the tsb, should revert back, to replace with the origional part the truck came with in this case. Or, at the least, inform the truck owner of the possible senerio's, and give him a choice of what he or she wants to do. Of course, this only makes sense on all expired warranties. Under warranty, Gm should do what they feel is best for them, since they are paying the tab...

I have a 2003 Silverado 4x4 5.3 liter and have had code P0449 come up - they say potentially from overfilling the tank - I have done this and won't do it again. Since it's February in PGH it is too damn cold to go outside and tinker with stuff under the truck. After searching this forum, some had talked about using SeaFoam gas additive for this same problem. Decided to try it ($8 is a bargain if it works). The writer said his check engine light went off after 60 miles.

Mine went off after 80 but thinking it would be just my luck that the check engine light would blow out, I rechecked for codes. Same code was there, erased it, and drove another 20 miles thus far, without the check engine light coming back on.

Rechecked for codes again, and there are no codes.

While I'm not sure (and I find it hard to believe) this is the final fix for the P0449 problem, I will continue to monitor and hopefully this will get me to warmer weather when I can clean out the part (as some have suggested) or just replace it.

I thank you for your productive and informative forum. :dunno:

OK - I did a lot of reading on this subject and have successfully repaired my new style Silverado LT for a little over $100 bucks.

For my 2007 Silverado, Ext Cab 4x4, LT2

I ordered AC Delco part #214-2082

It came with the solenoid and replacement filter unit (did not use).

1. Taking it off was really easy.

2. On the canister side, it is a white clip and can be fully pulled out with a screwdriver and needle-nose pliers

3. Taking of the flex and rigid lines on the solenoid required me to use the heat gun to remove. ***Make sure to keep the gun away from the flex as it is very thin.

4. I attempted to reattach the rigid hose but the end was a little brittle from the heat gun. I cut off a small section and replaced with 5/8 heater hose and 2 clamps. It was only about 1" long. This is covered in the GM Tech Advisory #2101090

5. Next I reattached all of the lines

6. To reset the CEL, I disconnected the + side of the battery for a few minutes.

7. Started it up and no light.

Been driving it now for a couple of weeks and no issues. I actually noticed a small increase in gas mileage. Not sure how this is related

Overall - saved myself about $350...

Any questions - PM me.

I have a 2008 z71 silverado 4.8 v8. I have code po446.

Where exactly is this part underneath?

This truck is a ranch truck. It has been busting mud holes and on very dusty here in west Texas and is at about 122,000 miles.

Could the vent just be clogged? You said you didn't use your filter why not? When I fill up, the pump will click off and will burp up gas/not talking gas easily. Makes me think clogged vent valve.

Where would you start?

Thanks in advance. --Tucker.

Here is another pic of the part off of my 2003.......

post-81176-1285114556_thumb.jpg

Did anyone ever get a part number for the one pictured. I also have a 2003 but don't want to pay the high price. Mine looks like the one pictured here. Not the round one Thanks.

I hope you all still keep up with these old threads. I am having the same problem. I have a 2004 GMC Yukon 4WD and went to AutoZone for a check engine light. They told me it was code P0446 which after doing a ton of searching on the topic, went ahead and ordered the vent valve. The one I ordered is the cyclindrical shaped one but after I just took the one it already had on, it looks like the one pictured above posted by B Ditty, looks like a cigarette box shape. I still went ahead and put the one I ordered on. Everything fits besides being able to mount it since it is too bulky. Since I don't have a device to clear the code, I went ahead and disconnected the battery to see if it'll clear this way. Right now, I'm still waiting for everything to clear. I disconnected the battery for about 15 minutes but it was still there, so were the presets on my radio so I figured i should wait longer. I'll advise. But if anyone out there thinks I'm making a bad move for putting in a part that didn't look like the one that was already there, please chime in. Thanks for any input on this.

I just changed mine for Tahoe 2003, and as per our dealer the box shaped one is not available anymore, I replaced it with the rounded one (GM 25932571 AC 214-2149),

instead of the box shaped GM 10382105 AC 214-1078).

THANK YOU to all who posted on this - my 2003 Tahoe with 5.3 non flex also just threw code PO446. I ordered the round canister version (214-2149) and it and for whatever reason it DID NOT FIT! maybe there is something different about my tahoe? The bracket on the crossmember that the unit slides onto did not permit enough clearance between the bracket, crossmember and floorpan for the round canister to work. Either a new/replacement/modified bracket is needed or the square filter box version is needed to allow clearance with the bracket.

I went on Amazon.com and ordered it for $18 bucks - it IS still available - part number with square filter is

AC Delco 214-1091 Canister Purge Valve

post-31251-1302461371_thumb.jpg

This has the exact same solenoid on it as the other parts, the only difference is the canister with the gauze nylon filter in it is rectangular instead of round. Even though I ordered it, I figured what the heck, take the old one apart and clean it out. Its not too tough.

1) disconnect electrical connector - pull up on tab to disengage lock and pull out

2) disconnect vac hose - when you squeeze hard on the tabs lock on the end of the hose, it causes the clips (tangs) inside to spread and you can slide the hose off the canister. Alternatively, get a thin screwdriver and carefully pry the tangs back without squeezing - thats what I did

3) slide the assembly off the bracket - you may need a thin screwdriver to pry back the metal lip (you'll see it) so the assembly slides off easier

4) take the top of the canister off - there are 4 tabs - gently bend them back and pry off the top of the box. it will have a sticky gasket on it - don't worry about it

5) with the top off, take out eh nylon mesh. I rinsed it out in warm water, sprayed it with wd40 and blotted it dry. it is like a foam lawn mower filter. mine was pretty dirty

6) spray silicone (not wd 40) into the solenoid hole. shake it around. using a 12v supply or battery, connect to the terminals with test clips. the solenoid should engage ( LOUD CLICK!) if you try to blow through the nozzle while engaged, it should be sealed. spray a little more silicone into it. then exercise the solenoid (12v on/off like 10 times). With 12V off, you should be able to blow air freely through it. If you engage the solenoid while enough air pressure is going through it, then disengage it the solenoid, the seal should hold.

7) get any excess silicone spray out - reassemble, and reinstall.

8) drive vehicle - my light went out in less than 5 miles. It has stayed out for about 75 miles so far. Seems fixed. I will keep the one coming from Amazon as a spare.

BTW - Advance Auto did read my code with their scanner, but they said they did not have the ability to clear the code.

Good luck!

My MIL only comes on when i am below a half of a tank so, i reset the code and keep her topped up no code in 4 months

Mine does the same thing, but do you know why this is happening? It is super annoying.

There seems to be alot of confusing info on this thread. Its hard to figure out what some are talking about and what the part#s are they are listing. I thought I had it figured out and called Advance and they had the part in stock so I dissembled my truck, Which mine is a PITA, and went to get the part and IT WAS THE PURGE VALVE. No listing for any vent valves.

So I came back here and found kad36 post, Went to Amazon and ordered it 15.97 plus shipping.

I just have to partially re Assemble the truck so I can drive it.

If the part I ordered matches the picture All will be good

Got the part Yesterday from Amazon. A 214-1091. It is an AC delco part and matches the original perfectly.

Installed it today and after 3 drive cycles the mil light went off on its own.

I cleared the code and now all the system checks should complete.

This particular thread did get a bit confusing but the bottom line is this is where I got the info to fix the problem myself for $21 and not the over $300 the stealer would have charged or even the $150 the dealer wanted for just a part.

The original lasted for 170,000 miles so I think I will give the same part a chance for another 170K.

This is a great site.

Thanks everyone for posting!

My 2008 Sierra threw CEL code P0449 a week ago, and I had been reading up on this thread and others for part numbers and all of the experiences that exist with this code. Today I start it up and no CEL. Any theories?

Sorry to say the CEL will return sooner or later. The fault will clear on its on but as soon as you fill the tank up there it is again. Majority of the time it is the solenoid that fails with to much resistance (high ohms). Best thing to do is first find the model that fits your vehicle then reseach the part.

My 2006 silverado set the fault, had it cleared but returned each reset. I found dirt in the vent valve, but it had high resistance, also checked it by applying 12vdc to the unit with solenoid failing to engage. The kit listed for over $200.00, as an alternative I replaced it with a 06 suburban unit with having to install 10" of heater hose($21.00) total.

Good Luck!!

    • I am sorry if this was misleading. That was a document attached to our most recent work order number (Doc# 7105804) that summarized all the current updates. These programs were ‘redone’ in the past but these versions dated 4/1/2016 were the ones that actually made all of the problems disappear. These programs were relayed to the dealer from the technical services group at GM. Here is the exact wording on the last work order:   “Front view camera reprogramming with SPS. A new version of FCM software was released to the service dept. In addition to providing general robustness and stability enhancements, this update includes all enhancements from previous software version releases. SPS camera and calibrate camera. OLH to perform extended camera relearn procedure after camera calibration. Would not take with first GDS learn. Front camera SPS – BDYZ333157450 GDS2 – camera road calibration performed 2810835 Front view camera reprogramming with SPS LT 0.6 OLH – extended camera relearn procedure OLH LT 1.5”   I got the truck back on 4/8 – since that time it has been great no problems whatsoever. The lane keep assist, active cruise control and AEB all work very well around town and at highway speeds up to 80mph. During this time I had been away for a week and purposely let the battery sit without a batter tender. Even with the battery a bit lower there were no problems exhibited. I really think this one has it fixed after dealing with these issues over a couple of years. These new programs and relearn process when completed seem to make all the parts (and newer replacement parts) ‘talk’ to each other without any glitches. Hope this helps
    • I turned 72 today. My day began with a trip to the pharmacy to pickup meds for me and the dog and then a stop at my chiropractor before heading home. Once home I started the job of replacing the rear brake pads and one rotor on our 2018 Silverado which will probably end up taking me 3 days to finish, gotta pace myself you know. Sometimes I question myself on why I still do most of my own repairs but if I wasn't then it's more than likely I would be sitting in front of the TV all day. It seems like the list of things I need to do gets longer no matter what I accomplish. I'm not complaining but being retired was so much easier when I was 62.   Peace
    • google "bathub failure curve". Basically, any part of the vehicle can fail at any time.  It starts off as being more likely (early failure), then the failure rate goes down (but does not go to zero), then it goes up over time because it wears/ages out.
    • I went from every other day to about once in five since the rain abated. I'm not unhappy about that. Took most of the month for the ditches to dry enough to mow.
    • Good for you and her!   Lots of brushing and grooming to be done
