Hello,

Has anyone upgaded there stock alarm? The alarm that came with my truck seems kinda lame, no shock or motion sensors. The alarm only goes off after they get the door open. Do after market alarms work with the keyless entry? Anything I should consider before I buy one? Thanks for any help :D

You can add a tilt sensor to the factory alarm (available thru the dealer). I was going to do this and the 2-way remote if it ever comes out. But once I added up the prices of the two parts I found out it was going to cost more then just going with aftermarket 2-way. I now have a Clifford 50.5X. I was using the Clifford with the factory remote start but I'm having the Clifford remote start put in this week b/c it has alot more functions I will use (adjustable run times, turbo timer which is really a way to remove the key and keep it running, gives status to the remote, etc). Since I'm going with the Clifford remote start it will now cost slightly more then the 2 GM parts but not by much.

If you want to stay factory, GM just added a shock sensor upgrade (part #17800431) to the factory alarms for the new body style trucks. I just got it added to my 07 nnbs silverado. It has to be programmed by gm and is intergrated into the DIC. It costed a little over 200.00 (120.00 part, 90.00 programming) but I already have the remote start and I like to keep things factory. The sensor is adjustable.

I had the shock sensor added back in October. The dealer does have to reprogram various modules with new, and custom, programming. It's custom because GM takes the current VCI (which contains all of the option combinations and features the truck has) and adds the shock sensor option. This allows the various modules to be aware of, and communicate with, the new sensor. In my case, the dealer reported that this had to be done by the guys up in Detroit. This wasn't good news since I dropped the truck off on a Saturday morning and was hoping to get it back the same day.

One thing to note about the shock sensor is that it doesn't have any kind of "pre-warning" chirp. You have to basically activate the sensor for about 7 seconds straight before the truck horn goes into full alarm. This essentially makes the whole system a 'theft-indicator" instead of a "theft-deterrent". Almost useless, imo.
