Gps Units

I travel quite a bit with my job and was looking into GPS units. I didn't really want to spend a lot of money, just need something that keeps me from getting lost. After all I am a guy and refuse to stop and ask directions

 

I was looking at the basic Tom Tom union for around $160 and the Garmin 260 for around $300. One difference (I think) is the spoken street function. I believe the Tom Tom union will say "turn right in 500 ft" versus the garmin unit that says "turn right in 500 ft on Main street". Just curious if anyone has had experience with either of these units and is it worth it to have the name of the street spoken.

I have the Garmin and it has the say-street-name feature. I have found it very helpful when a couple of streets cross very near each other.

Stay away from Tom Tom. Well, I don't like them anyways. Garmin is good, as is Magellan. Both have been around a while and are proven. I have the Magellan maestro 4000, and I like it. But it either doesn't say the name of the street, or I haven't figured out how to turn it on yet. The Magellan crossover does, and it can be used on the trail along with the road. Pretty pricey though. My mom has the garmin nuvi and likes it alot.

my garmin nuvi 200 is great. Doesnt say street names but thats fine. I have used both and the turn in however many ft is good enough.

I've got the Nuvi 260, which is the cheapest Garmin that calls out the actual street names, which is a great feature, and can be entertaining. It works great for what I need it for, mostly being in rural areas. Sometimes in the city it takes a couple of minutes for it to find the satellite signal, and it'll get a little disoriented for a couple of seconds if you're in a small alley or something, but it will always get you where you want to go. It doesn't always give the best way to a destination, but it will always get you there. I paid $250 for mine on Amazon. I'm extremely satisfied, and I use it more than I ever thought i would. Spend the extra $ for the street names, it really helps.

I have the Garmin nuvi 200W and I love it was around $260. BTW Garmin is going to have updates to download at the end of April from there website.
