Windshield Wiper/washer Just Starts On Its Own.

The wiper/washer will just start up without using the switch and go a few swipes. I know I've read of this happening in a post in the last few months, but I can't seem to find the topic or a TSB. I know Silvia's under warranty but I've no time to go to the dealer before leaving Fri AM for trip.

If someone has experienced this, was it an increasing-frequency type of thing? or did it just happen every few days. Needed to take the truck on the trip but wasn't sure if it was a problem that would degenerate into a constant thing or not.

Thanks y'all.

Does your truck have the Rain Sense wipers? If so, they're on and "something" on the windshield made them think it was raining -- or, at the very least, the windshield needed a swipe or two to clean something off.

yep could be the rain sence. i had to have the wiper motor and module that is also attached or in the motor replaced. they would do what ever they wanted when ever they wanted. stop in the middle of the windshiels and sometimes not work

So far, I haven't had any issues with mine. The ones on my dad's Cadillac seem to randomly go off a little more than mine do. But, they'll still surprise me from time to time, with a seemingly random swipe.

Ditto, Michael, no issues with mine...but I have heard of the "phantom swipe"

Sorry to start this thread and run, I had an emergency (non-medical) errand that came up.

Thanks for the responses, I don't have the rain sense wipers, I have had a random extra swipe after using the washer on occasion, nothing consistent there though I think it would be a neat idea for the wipers to tidy up a few seconds after the final wash swipe.

But this problem was a full blown washer cycle without my instigating it.

And Scott, when you put the sig pics beside each other like that the browser screen reformats all text to that width and you can't see the whole text line without scrolling sideways on each line.

Sorry to hear that about the emergency. I hope all is well now...

As far as the wipers go... Since you don't have rain sense, I have no clue what would cause that problem.. Maybe some sort of short?

Sorta unrelated, but when I had my '95 chevy at one point during a winter my wipers started to turn on by themselves sporadically. Ended up being a wire in the steering column had gotten some of the insulation rubbed off and was shorting.

Thanks for the concern, "unplanned interruption" possibly a better choice of words.

Well, the only consolation is that I'm going to the N. Georgia mountains and this evening's weather forecast says it's supposed to be raining most all weekend. So if it gets to happening very often it won't be a real big deal. Also, the malfunction does extend the courtesy of wetting the windshield, I do so hate to run a dry blade over glass.

Not sure if this helps or not, but after my accident, I had been having some intermittent problems with the wipers coming on. There were two problems they corrected. One was the rainsense sensor which I know you don't have, the other was the replacement of the solvent heater module. If you have the heated wiper fluid option, my wipers were swiping one time at around 30 mph for unknown reasons. Why they replaced that I don't know!

Something else to check.

Thanks, I have the heated fluid and vaguely remember a post that the heater was replaced to solve a similar problem. I know that when this becomes frequent enough to demonstrate it, the warranty will take care of it.

I dunno, seems fine in your screen shot. Someone else had also mentioned line length in another thread. My display is wide format, but maybe it's my settings. Other posts concerning sig pic sizing has generally produced a consensus (unofficially) that 400x200 pixel is a good all-around size and accomodates laptops, lower res CRTs, load time for dialup members, as well as reducing the page length to scroll down for easier reading.
