Nothing much to report. IE pissed me off with all the constant crashing, and no fixes for it (this has been happening over a year) and after I installed the business contact manager for Outlook (almost had too, kept bugging me everytime I would open Outlook) outlook would crash within 10 seconds of me opening it. Only way to fix it right now is with a reg edit, and while I'm sure I'm savvy enough to have done it with no problems, I don't want to take the chance with a new computer. Ya know?

So with all that said, any tips for more effective use of this combo?

EDIT: I said it was happening over a year, it is more like about a year. I got this computer some time around now last year.

I like Firefox but it is too buggy. About 5 minutes and it locks up my PC. Nothing else in the history of this PC has ever locked it up. I tried unloading, reloading, updating, etc but the only fix was removing it. back to IE I went with no issues. Go figure.

Firefox, too many bugs, security holes, etc. The same could probably be said for IE, but at least they fix the issues fairly quickly. :shakehead:

I work with IE on hundreds of computers. The only time it crashes is when some crazy user manages to find some spyware that screws up IE or simply integrates itself with IE via the add-ins. Normally fixable of course.

But if you want an IE alternative, hate Microsoft, or are just bored, check out Opera.

Humph. I've used Firefox on my brother's computer, and it was fine. And the new build is bug free (so far).

I actually went to Opera first, but changed to Firefox after I found out I couldn't use McAfee's site adviser in it. That really was a deal breaker since I do a lot of downloading, and I really need to know what sites are ones I need to avoid, what sites are risky, and which sites are fine (relatively speaking since it completely possible for a site to have content that is harmful, but it not be caught by site adviser, but the way I see it, every little bit counts).

I'm not saying your decision is incorrect or flawed, or anything like that, just describing my thought processes and what not.

Now FF does have its quirks, but like all new programs it is just something new to get used to.

Moving right along.

Anyone have suggestions for external hard drives. I'm still in the research phase of my purchase, so even if a specific model isn't named, info about what I need to look for would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm, can't say I've ever had a problem with IE crashing constantly on my XP system. Are you running Vista? As a general statement, most everyone I know with Vista curses constantly about it for one reason or another...

You can add me to that group. Can't run Q3A. That was one of the reasons i wanted my own computer. I was playing it on my brother's and it would run fine once you started the game, but the hard drive is failing, so load times were slow. Mom's computer is faster, but that ain't goin to happen.

It may just be a conflict with Vista, but even still, I got sick of the problems and moved on.

I like the Mozilla stuff, I just couldn't get it running smooth on my box.

I've run Firefox on just about every machine I've used for the last 2 or 3 years, at least. (Maybe longer than that, I'm not sure.) I have rarely had any problems with it, whether it was XP, Vista, or Linux. Actually, I've had a problem with the current release of Firefox and drop-down menus not always generating correctly. As you move the mouse, sometimes the foreground and background colors both go to black, so you can't read what you're selecting. Other than that, I haven't had any issues. The next time I see new video drivers for this card, I'll try that and see if that fixes the FF issue.

I've also tried Thunderbird a couple of times. I just never have been all that impressed with it, though. I've probably spent too much time on customizations, scripts, and rules for Outlook (for both work and home) to ever get too far away from Outlook for email, reminders, etc. I also like that Outlook will seemlessly update my contacts, reminders, etc. on my phone. Just plug it in via USB and they sync everything up. Pretty handy!

Time for a reformat. It sounds more like you have some mal-ware infesting IE than outlook F'ing with it.

I missed the part about Outlook crashing, the first time through... A corrupt PST could be causing Outlook to crash. Do a search on your C: drive (or whichever drive you have Office/Outlook installed on) for scanpst.exe. Run it. With Outlook closed (apparently it can't stay open for long anyway. So, that shouldn't be a problem), point ScanPST to your .PST file and run the repair utility. That "may" fix your problem.. and it may not. But, it's worth a shot.

lol and people wonder why we don't support outlook at comcast...

Good call about scanpst I forgot that even existed. Most of the time I never even want customers to attempt that stuff. But, here on a msg board if he screws his outlook up it's not our fault. :shakehead:

Yeah, good point. If you hose your Outlook worse than it's already hosed.. Like, if it only stays open for TWO seconds, instead of ten... It's not our fault! :shakehead:

(And, yes, I know that's not what you meant, Zach. )

Well... uhmmmm.... If you don't know what you meant, then how can you be sure that what I thought you meant wasn't what you really meant, even though you didn't know you meant it when you said what you said before I said what I said about what you said about what you meant, even though you've now said you didn't know what you meant after I said I knew you didn't mean what you're now saying you didn't know what you meant..??
