Yeah, I'm just waitng for the Direct Exhaust Injection. It will be epic.

:withstupid::drool::drool::lol::lol::)

I didn't know this internet farce is still around much less being takin seriously

Next I'll try to be more explicit with the topic titles:

This topic thread is a query about DIRECT FUEL INJECTION of Gasoline for the LS series truck engines.

my 07 crewcab gets 25mpg on the freeway...direct injection would be great but will require a new generation of computer. seeing as how gm just swapped to a new generation last year, it will probably be a while before DI LS motors become popular

I would think the money that would be spent developing DI for trucks is being spent on the half-ton diesel.

Actually the a DI engine would really be no different than a Diesel engine, besides a spark plug and lower compression. I say just use a regular Diesel engine instead of fussing with a DI gasoline engine. Still going to have similar problems if not worse in knocking if there is a problem, smoke if it leaks, and not as safe. A Diesel is simpler than a gas engine to run, no spark, just fuel and compression. A DI gas engine would require a spark plug, a fuel system similar to a Diesel that needs lubrication, and a throttle plate. I see nothing but minuses for a truck application.

DI is great. i have a feeling all vehicles are heading that direction. it will just take time. it is significantly more efficient. you can run much higher compression ratios. the fact that the fuel is going from such a high pressure to a relatively low pressure, there is a SIGNIFICANT temp drop. this keeps engine temps down allowing more compression, more aggressive timing curves. it also allows for a more complete burn cycle reducing emissions and drastically increasing fuel mileage. whats not to love

I see more promise in having a Hydrogen/Methane/Gas/E85 truck. It's simple, have a tank and a delivery system for the methane/hydrogen and a conventional E85/gas setup. Have a dual source truck would be nice. Just a flip of a switch you can run on hydrogen or pure ethanol. That technology is already here and easy to put in a production truck. I think that having an option of running on hydrogen in a truck is far more green that a DI gas engine. You can run higher compression ratios, better spark curves with ethanol/hydrogen. The higher the ignition temperature the more efficient it is. Also hydrogen runs way leaner than gas and it runs hotter bringing more power and no emissions.

DI gasoline is a technology tried in the past but was not as efficient compared to a Diesel engine, but today auto companies are in the current mindset that they need something new to have people buy more cars by using a old idea and putting a spin on it. Yeah, only the American and German companies are putting DI gas engines in their cars while the Asian car makers are putting hydrogen power cars into the fold. Too bad the Asians have got it right since 1973. Today car companies only think about selling what is now not what is needed.

The thing is it costs more to produce Hydrogen then anything else! It is not economically feasible at this time to have a Hydrogen powered economy. Besides every automotive company is researching Hydrogen not just the Asian manufacturers. Also a regular engine optimized to run on gasoline, or anything like that will LOSE power when running on Hydrogen. A couple of years ago Hummer had a H2 that was converted to run on hydrogen. They used the same engine, with 325 HP and then put a supercharger on it and it could only produce like 200 HP. Also a DI engine is totally different from a diesel. Diesels still ignite fuel differently, by compression, not by an actual spark. The same goes for DI engines, they use a spark to ignite the fuel.

Regarding whether we will see a DI LS engine, I remember reading an article in which the author got to test the new HCCI engines that GM has developed and while he was their he noticed a regular looking Escalade just sitting to the side. He asked one of the employees who said that it was a prototype with a DI 6.2 V8. I also read somewhere that the 6.2 engine is the last of the generation 4 V8s and that Gen 5 will be coming within the next couple of years. Hopefully these will employ DI. Also regarding whether the money would be spent designing a half-ton diesel and not a DI truck engine, I think that wouldn't be true either. I mean come on its GM, its not like they cant run different projects simultaneously. Which I bet they are doing.
