Sad Situation

I got my truck back from the local 4x4 shop "Auto Conversions". I had asked about getting the front windows tinted to match the back but didn't give him the go ahead so I was suprised to see that he had tinted them. When I didn't see it on the invoice, I asked him about it. His reply was, " I'll be real suprised if we're here another 60 days. Business has dropped of 70% in the last 2 months." A lot of lookers but most folks say they're scared to spend any money because of rising fuel prices. He said that he had a surplus of tint, it didn't take long to put it on and I've been a long time customers so he said, "No Charge" with almost a tear in his eye. His son and business partner gazed out of the showroom window at the high volume of traffic passing buy, probably hoping that someone would stop in. A good man, a good family, makes me sick. I'm sure he has some savings but who knows how long that will last the both of them. Just sad  . There's no way I could have accepted his offer and added the $70.00 to the invoice amount, he shook his head and just grinned, "I love this town", he said.

I think were going to see that a lot with the truck accessory stores,It's sad for sure.

But if truck sales keep going down like they are,Nobody will need accessories for them.

My hats off to you for paying for the tint job even after he said "No Charge" :D

Maybe he should adapt and start selling Prius accessories?

I was thinking more of if wanting to stay in the business by reducing overhead costs and working capital.

Though, diversification of offerings is another example. Wonder what a prius would look like with a brush guard and some off-road lights.

I've been wanting to order some step bars for my truck. Being a good American, wanting to support the local shops, I've stopped in to my local truck accessory shops. I've been to 3 local shops numerous times, never being able to talk to anyone. I go during their supposed business hours, finding no one there. One time, the doors were wide open, but no one was around.

Sounds like your boys have the customer service down ok. The guys in Des Moines could take lessons from them. :D

This country would be in a lot better shape if we had more good Americans like you. :D

I know, but I wanted to try to buy local. I feel guilty about ordering online all the time. I always feel people shopping online and big chain stores are what ruined the local mom and pop shop.

I tried, and apparently they don't really want my business. :D

While he's at it, maybe he should just get a poodle and a sex change too?

It's really sad to see a small business go under like that.

It's hitting all the aftermarket places hard, performance shops in particular. It's sad, too, because alot of the simple performance enhancements (less restrictive exhausts/intakes, headers, etc.) actually INCREASE fuel mileage. Tuning the PCM for those enhancements can make an even larger gain. However, they cost money, and the payback in fuel savings isn't that quick (though it's faster than buying a new car...), so people don't want to invest in them.
