Msd Or Taylor Spark Plug Wires?

Recommended Posts

I would like to replace the spark plug wires on my 1999 silverado that has 112,000 miles on stock wires. Are there any pros or cons, to these wires? Where would you purchase them and for how much?

I've ran both in my past vehicles. They are both great quality. Any of the 8mm will do as it's a very short coil to plug run. But I'm making an assumption that you have an LS based truck engine and that you don't have a "Classic" Silverado with a 5.7 Vortec. Although even with that engine, either brand's 8mm are a good choice. Taylor makes set in more colors, if you are into that sort of stuff.

Yes, new body for 1999, 5.3 L. check out my truck discription below. Where can you buy these wires for a good price? I already replaced the spark plugs with A/C delco 41-985 Irdium at 75,000 miles. I am noticing a slight vibration at idle, and thought wires may help.

A couple of things made me go for the Taylor Powervolt 8.2s.

1) My local speed shop does a lot of business with dirt track guys. He said the Taylors will far outlast the MSD wires under these conditions.

2) Taylors are all US made from US materials. I cannot be sure about the MSDs. It is my understanding though that they may be assemled in the US but the wire may be imported.

3) Call both of their customer service departments and just ask them a few questions or asked them why you should buy their wire over their competition. My experience was the folks at Taylor are real people who will answer your questions in a thorough and courteous manner. I will not elaborate but I made 2 calls to MSD and the experience was 180 degrees from what I just described.

I've run both in LS engines. Can't go wrong with either. With plug wires this short, (and not counting if one is damaged) they would basically have to be made out of mud to have an effect on performance. Go with whichever is cheapest and most convenient for you to get.

Well, I'm willing to spend $75.+, for a wire better than stock. I also can order online, since it's not a rush to get. I've never bought wires before, I've sold, my 3 other trucks, before I had this maintence to do.

I've run Taylor, MSD, and OEM on various vehicles over the years, some modded, some not so much. In most cases, you're really not going to see any significant increases between them in... well, anything. Especially in stock to near-stock applications. Other than the added color under the hood and the obvious benefit of new wires. :uhoh:

Summit Racing or Jegs, not the absolute cheapest, but they both have no hassle order and service.

As another has mentioned, I try to buy from a local speed shop. Again not the cheapest but it's local and with great knowledge and service.

The Packard Electric wires that GM uses really isn't that bad for the stock LS engines. The BWD (Borg Warner) wires are very similar in quality to the OEM Packard's. This is based on what I think I remember from the many plug wire threads that I've read over the years about LS engine wires.

Well, thanks for you posts. I think I will go with stock wires, from some of your replys. I hope the idle will smooth up with the new wires. Thanks.

i had msd on my last truck for 3 years and now i've had msd on my 2000 5.3 for at least a year. ive had no real complaints with them, but my idle isn't as smooth as i would like either. new wires of any brand might not smooth out a rough idle.

I have cleaned the throttle body, spark plugs at 75,000 miles, fuel filter every 30,000 miles, and thought I'd try the wires, to see if it helps. It's not a rough idle, But is noticable, as a slight vibration, at stoplights, for instance. The rpm's don't seem to change, but I do notice it every now and then.

I know it's not "cool" but if you got 115K out of the stock wires...why not get another set of them???...I certainly understand the "look" and admittedly higher quality/material boots on others but did you have the stockers all this time with no issues??????

I always use "stock" or "oem" wires on my daily drivers but me and everyone I race with use MSD. MSD heli-core wires (blue) are not really that good but their super conductor wires (red) have very low resistance. My longest wire on my race car is only 92 ohms. on a gen3 engine with coil packs, the wires would probably be like 20 ohms. I'm sure taylor are good too but I only know MSD.

    • Hello hello looking forward to expanding my knowledge of the 2026 2500 HD that I just bought.   Truck has 3500 miles on it four-wheel-drive crew cab and I’m about to put a 6 1/2 inch BDS lift on it 18 x 10 -25 offset with 37’s   Already have the wheels and tires just waiting on the lift install in about three weeks   Question what surprises am I not gonna be happy with?  I’m not new to lifted trucks so I know that acceleration towing gas mileage all that is affected..   Question is those of you that have this truck this powertrain with a 10 speed Allison and have done the mods that I’m doing,,, how bad is it? Is that Allison constantly gonna be hunting for the right gear to go into? And what about towing, acceleration, fuel consumption as mentioned?    Lastly how come I can’t find any ring pinion gear set up for these axles and when could I expect to see them?   I apologize if there’s any typos I’m doing speech to text on my iPhone.
    • I've got a 2013 2500 6.0L Flexfuel. Drove the truck earlier today with no issues. Went to run an errand tonight and noticed key fob wouldn't work. Figured battery was dead, so replaced fob batter. Still wasn't working. Grabbed my other set of keys with the other fob and that one wasn't working either. So I manually unlock truck and insert key. Interior lights come on, dashboard lights up, turn key and truck starts. Turn truck off, like a moron, and try starting again. This time no crank, no click, no nothing. Lights still come on and dash lights up, but now I'm getting a service 4wheel drive, service tire monitor, etc. Check voltage on battery and Im showing 12.2v. Throw my battery charger on it and give it 15 mins and try starting again. But still no crank no start. Decide maybe its a bad battery, run to autozone grab a new one and put it in. Same issue. Disconnect battery and let it sit for 15 mins. Try again and still nothing. I had managed to roll the windows down earlier as its a humid night, but now I can't get them to roll up. Power locks are also not working now. Then randomly I try the key again, and it fires right up. Immediately I roll up the windows as we have nothing but rain forecast this week. I shut it back off wait 30 seconds and start up again. Worked a 2nd time. So turn it off, start putting things back together. Try one more time, and back to no crank no start. And now the car alarm starts going off. Had to disconnect battery and leave it that way for the night as I don't think my neighbors would appreciate my alarm going off again tonight. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.
    • No one will care for you like you care for you. Do what you can for as long as you can. IMHO of course.
    • How about them NICKS!!!
    • Hi there.  Long time lurker, first post.    i have read the previous posts regarding the water ingress problem with this emblem.  I bought my 1500 SLT the  summer of 2025 new and after reading the MANY problems with these emblems failing I decided to install one anyways.  As per a YouTube video, I sealed ( or tried to) this sign with silicone sealant around the outer perimeter joint and the holes that were already somewhat sealed on the rear plate of the emblem.  And installed the connector assembly using dielectric grease on the connectors. The installation looked great and worked well for about 4 months……then FAILURE.  Grrrrrr…… I live in the great white north and wash my truck weekly in an automatic car wash  to keep the salt off.  Let me tell you that removing the old, failed emblem is a whole different animal than removing the OEM individual letters without removing the grill assembly. Mainly because the illuminated logo is built differently than the original letters which  you can remove the red surface lettering with a knife or some kind of blade which gives access to the tabs which hold the logo onto the grill. So I had to essentially destroyed the old emblem to remove it. Doing so killed my chance of doing somekind of autopsy on the failed , old logo.  But there was plenty of water inside when I ripped it apart.  Prior to installing the new assembly I tried it with the old harness and it works fine.   Does anyone have any insight as to where the water is getting into this emblem? I intend to seal the new logo with slow curing epoxy this time around using a syringe.  I think this newer emblem may be an updated unit which I hope GM got the vendor to fix. It has an October 2025 date on it.    If this one  fails,  I am just going to revert back to the non-illuminated letters….AFTER PULLING THE GRILL.    Any thoughts on sealing with epoxy would be appreciated. Thx!   Doug
