Cowboy09 Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 I've got a 90 Scottsdale with a 5.7 and manual transmission and I'm trying to cut down on engine noise as much as possible. I know there's a certain amount you can't avoid, but where does it typically come from? It's so loud I can't go through a drive-thru without turning it off! I could try to record it, but I don't know if it would come out well. One sound that I definitely can describe though is an almost clicking noise that happens like when you accidentally shift from 2nd to 5th. This happens when I try to accelerate quickly or at high RPM's. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
Cowboy09 Posted June 25, 2008 Author Posted June 25, 2008 Well, I already fixed one leak and didn't detect any others, but I'll certainly check again!
L29er Posted June 26, 2008 Posted June 26, 2008 i once had a 5.7 in the shop that sounded like well, a ticking time bomb!! drained a pint of oil and dropped in some rislone and an hour later she sounded like new!!! i figured the lifters were gumed up and weren`t getting full pressure, still see that ole girl driving around too, that was years ago! just an idea, might put you out 15 bucks er something, its a heavy detergent oil, cleans big time,
2000DV4.8 Posted June 26, 2008 Posted June 26, 2008 Well, I already fixed one leak and didn't detect any others, but I'll certainly check again! Check for a leaky exhaust manifold, they can make clicking noises.

Controller Posted June 26, 2008 Posted June 26, 2008 When i first read the title I laughed thinking there is a pretty good chance it comes from the reciprocating action of the internal combustion engine you have under the hood.
Cowboy09 Posted June 26, 2008 Author Posted June 26, 2008 Very true- it's a loud damn engine anyway. I'm just trying to get it down to the bare noise that it has by itself. In other words, I'm cheap and don't want to have to insulate any more than I have to
Cowboy09 Posted June 27, 2008 Author Posted June 27, 2008 Well, I feel like a dork. Found a small one on the left side coupling. I'm waiting for it to cool down before I mess with it. Once you've had about 20 exhaust burns, you get patient

Cowboy09 Posted July 3, 2008 Author Posted July 3, 2008 For anyone who might come back to this, apparently it was missing a donut gasket! I replaced that and now the most noise comes from my fan! Where it used to rumble and roar, the thing practically purrs in the engine compartment and has a gentle rumble from the pipes. It'll get louder once I get the catalytic converter taken care of (20 years of pollution might cause a little backpressure, y'think?). I was looking at doing some serious cab insulation for sound, but now I don't think it'll need much at all.
GM GIMP Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 I removed the clutch fan and installed electric fans. That makes for a major reduction in noise.
