Identifying Chevy Heads?

Can anyone tell me how I can identify what size cylinder heads I have when the engine block is not available?

 

I am looking to buy a set of heads from this person but he does not know what size they are but claims they are high compression heads.

 

I have also been told that first generation heads are interchangable with different size small blocks, but what years are we refering to?

There are numbers cast onto the head. any head with a small combustion chamber is "high compression". Also if you mill the heads, they increase compression, II would have this checked by a good machine shop. If you have a good shop, they can pretty id the heads and tell you everything about them.
