2004GMC1500CC Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 I rarely tow and never abuse it. At the tranny shop now. Wife isn't happy and I am not thrilled.
VMax2007 Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 Maybe cuz you had a "Hack" do your tune? It's not the first case of tranny failure I have heard of on a WFM tune. I'm just sayin' ......
Draenor Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 Good eye Jeff, I did not see that. I would see about getting re-tuned. Especially if it is a recent tune. Jesse has been slacking lately.

I'm just sayin' ......+1, I didn't notice that. Had the tune done way back in either 04 or 05. Have the tow package, so yes it has a tranny cooler and I have a guage and always watch the temps and never had a heating issue. Just got back from a trip to Florida, glad it didn't go out while there.
Won_Hunglo Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 The fastest way to smoking any tranny is to tow in OD. Always tow in 3 with tow haul on & your GM tranny will live a long, healthy life. A temp gauge is a must! Keep it under 190F for long life.
Silverado4x4 Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 Just because you had it done back in 04 or 05 doesnt mean much, it means it slowly ate your tranny. This is why I dont like tunes as it greatly reduces the life of the drivetrain and related items.
Rosedog Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 hmm my 03 Tranny started going out in Oregon on our way home from So. Cal. it only had 85k on it. Needless to say I was scared/pissed sitting at a traffic light and it wouldn't move. I don't have a tune and I don't remember what it exactly was either but I'm extremely happy that I had bought the extended warranty. I hope you have one it will help.

If done correctly, tuning can actually INCREASE the life of your tranny. Smooth shifts are created by SLIPPAGE, which generates heat and kills trannys. But most people like smooth shifts. That is why they are programmed that way from the factory.
pastorscott Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 [ If smooth shifts hurt the tranny - would running in tow mode all the time make it last longer ?? just my 2 cents
VMax2007 Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 [ If smooth shifts hurt the tranny - would running in tow mode all the time make it last longer ?? just my 2 cents Not that simple, there are other things to consider. The shift pressures are not the only thing T/H alters.
medic323 Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 I have had really bad luck with the GM transmissions. Ive lost 2, both around 50k miles. One was lifted and one was bone stock, never towed anything. Got GM to lemon law the first truck, had to eat the cost on the second.
svensk Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 <-----146,000 miles on original tranny and has a hack tune. I just had my tranny flushed with amsoil month back and the tranny guy said it looked fine still. He thinks the increased line pressure helped the longevity. My tranny was doing mad slipping on the stock PCM before the tune.
Jansen Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 I have a 2004 and it had a weak shift every 5000 miles (give or take 1000) that was a serious slip. I took to the dealership for a known TSB in regards to this and had the PCM updated to remove the problem. If your 2004 was doing this, or had the faulty programming, you would be susceptible to the failure. I've had my fluid changed 2x in 60,000 miles and I don't think driving it with out a tune or with a tune killed it. I had mine changed 1st after I had the fix (approx 33,000) to see the level of metals in the fluid. The second was at 58000 to see if the level of metals dropped (they did), I did not put a tune on my truck. I don't know if I was headed towards early failure or if the TSB even helped, I just know that my wear is decreasing without using a tune. I know plenty of GM people who routinely get 200,000 out of their trucks (granted, these were the 97/98 model year trucks). Unfortunately, I think the trans in this case was a bad one from the beginning.
