Tire Position Relearn

I rotated my tires today on my '07 and attempted the position relearn just the way the owners manual says using the DIC. The truck will go into relearn by sounding the horn twice and then illuminating the left front turn signal. This is where I'm supposed to either inflate or deflate the tire until the horn chirps and the right front signal is illuminated. I cannot get past the first tire. All sensors still work as the pressure value changes drastically when I try to relearn.

 

Is there anything that I am doing wrong......I really don't want to pay the dealer to use their tool to do what should be very simple?

 

My process:

1. Set parking brake
   
2. Turn ignition to on
   
3. Use DIC to enter Relearn (Horn chirps twice)
   
4. Inflate or deflate left front (I tried both ways, even starting from as low as 15 psi as I thought I may not have been making a fast enough pressure change)

When you deflate the tires, just deflate for 4-5 seconds, and then wait. The horn may not toot right away, but you dont' need to let any more air out. Just walk to the next tire and wait for the horn. Then when it sounds, repeat it on the next tire.

I have tried this multiple times and it is a giant PITA. Take it down to your dealer or to your local Discount Tire or similar and ask them for a hand. They have a tool that makes this a 2 minute job. It really is worth the drive not to have to F with it. I've wanted to break something every time I've tried on my own.

I did my 08, took about 2 minutes total. We then tried my friends 07 and couldn't get past the first tire just like you. I think its screwed on the 07's.

From what I have read in this forum and what I have tried myself. Your truck will either do the relearn or it won`t. Mine will not. No matter how I try to deflate or inflate the tires, it will not relearn. I have to take it to the dealer. At least the service manager does it right away for me so I don`t have to drop it off.

I have a 07 and 2 sets of tires 17" and 20" with TPMS the extra set seems to nail it everytime, the original set takes a couple tries and is a Pita

You forgot to spin around 3 times while hopping on one foot and patting your head!!!

You are not serious are you? Knowing the general condition of your tires at all times far outweighs the 5-minute PITA every few months that goes away with a 5-minute trip to the dealer or local tire shop.

Yeah, these TPMS deals are nice. Her 07 Impala wouldn't relearn them either. She just got new tires so I asked the guy if he could relearn them for us. He kinda looked at me and said, "Yeah . . . I think we can do that."

Yes, I am serious. I know the general condition of my tires at all times because I look at them before/after every trip, check the air pressure at least once a week (more if I'm on a road trip or think I may have a leaky tire), and listen for odd noises while I'm driving. I don't need a computer telling me what I already know, along with giving me a hassle every time I try to do a tire rotation.

 

Besides, around here that 5-minute trip also separates me from some more of my $$$ which I'd rather keep in my pocket.

On many occasions before I learned this I had flattened at least 2 tires to get it to relearn after a rotation. Now, let air out for 6 seconds, stop, wait, horn honks within about 15 seconds, move to next tire. Works every time.

 

The problem is something like this. The TPMS senders in the tires have 2 modes, relearn and operation. Aparently when you constantly let air out somehow the air flowing thru the valvestem creates a resonance that tricks it into thinking it is in operation mode and it does not send the relearn signal. Or something to that effect.
