4.10 Axle Ratio

Need help quickly if possible. Have a Sierra 2500HD on the way. Dealer ordered wrong axle ratio. I wanted the 3.73, the truck coming in has 4.10. How big a gas penalty is this? I am NOT towing a huge trailer or any trailer at all right now. What is the RPM difference at various speeds between these two ratio's??

this has been debated on here before but most of us agree there is no major difference. I am getting better mpg than some people i know with 3.73 gears and and i have 4.10 gears. it's not going to be 10mpg vs 16 mpg. the way you drive the truck will effect your mpg more than anything.

 

on a 1:1 trans gear, 4.10 and 3.73 gears would be about 200rpm different at 55mph. in OD its about 160rpm difference.

I doubt that you would ever see a difference, and if you did, it would be marginal. I would say to take the truck with the 4.10 in case you ever do decide to tow, you will be thankful you did. I wish mine had the 4.10, though the 3.73 is not bad, just wish I had the other.

When I need tires, I'll go an inch bigger in diameter and make up some rpm's.

I bought my Yuk XL used and almost passed it up because I thought I wanted 3.73s and it had 4.10s.

 

If you do a lot of Interstate driving at speeds above 75, you will feel it the most. If you spend a lot of time on 2 and 4 lane roads at 60 or less, you could see better MPG over 3.73s.

 

My avg right now is running 19.45 mpg in my Yuk XL. It will get about 19.2 on pure Intersate driving and 21 to 22 if running 60 or less.

 

If you do take it and ever use it for towing, you will like the extra grunt the 4.10 s offer.
