03 Sierra With Burned Drl Socket?

Hey guys. I bought an 03 sierra last year and noticed that the passenger side daytime running light was out. I assumed it was a blown bulb because the drivers side works fine. I bought a bulb and took the socket out and noticed there was no bulb in there. The previous owner had taken the bulb out and it looked like the socket got so hot that it melted some of the inner plastic and distorted the shape of the outer plastic. That bitch was about to catch a fire. Anybody have any ideas on what I should do?

Very common, replace the socket.

hey,

i had the same problem... went to autozone to get a replacement bulb. and he give me a different#bulb.. can't remember the# but he said it wouldn;t run as hot as the originals..

see if you can get your favorite part's guy to give you a different bulb to use.....

I believe the DRL bulbs are a 3157 bulb, I read somewhere else on here that the passenger side DRL bulbs seems to burn out on alot of GM trucks faster( can't remember if it was the passenger or drivers side) so I think GM or whomever it was suggested using the 4114 bulbs in place of the 3157 bulbs, look into it on here for the DRL bulb blowing out alot easier on the one side. I use amber bulbs in my DRL's and havent blown a bulb yet, even when I had the stock white bulbs didn't blow a bulb, I however did replace the turn signal housing with new clear bulbs and noticed a burnt look on the older housing from the bulb, not sure if it's from the heat or what.

Found this old thread on a search. I just purchased a 2003 1500HD, and my passenger side DRL was out. After looking in the Sylvania catalog, I bought a pair of 4114LL's to replace both DRLs. When I took things apart, I found that the driver's side socket was cracked from overheating - but that bulb was still working. Once I replaced both bulbs (but not the socket), neither lamp works. I was thinking that I should have trusted the owner's manual and stuck with the 4157's...but after seeing this post, I'm now wondering if that burned socket is the real source of my problem.

 

Anyone else run into this?

No its the socket. GM started putting the 4114s in around 04 or 05. There is a TSB on this somewhere.

Mine came with 4114s.I have had 4114LLs (long life) in my 05 for over three years with no issues.

A new 14 volt DRL bulb, P/N 15199562 (trade bulb #4114K), is now available for use whenever a DRL lamp bulb on the above listed vehicles requires replacement. This more robust, higher voltage DRL bulb replaces P/N 1999482 (trade bulb #4157K). These bulbs should be replaced in pairs for customer satisfaction.

I've had similar things happen before. This was on an older Envoy I used to own -- the low beam headlights:

I ended up doing that a couple of weeks back; I bought new sockets at the dealership and installed them with 4114LL bulbs. Everything has been fine since.

 

While I had everything apart, I picked up a 3M headlight polishing kit and cleaned up the housings a little bit...

My wife's 05 Tahoe is having the same issues. I noticed about 3 months or so ago that the passenger side tail light/brake light wasn't working. A few days later the driver side stopped working. Got new bulbs (3157s) and went to change them. The old ones didn't look bad so I checked them and they were still good. Both of the sockets look to have gotten burned, I'm guessing, from the bulbs getting too hot.

 

Fast FWD to last night...I noticed the passenger side was out once again. I checked the passenger side bulb and it was still good, just loose (I assume the socket grew slightly from getting hot and caused the bulb to be loose). The driver side was another story...the socket was actually melted slightly on the inside, causing the bulb to be stuck. The bulb base cracked when I was finally able to get it out.

 

What are some lower temp bulbs for the the brake/tail lights? I plan on getting new sockets along with cooler burning bulbs, just have to find some sockets that won't break the bank (AC Delco OEM sockets are anywhere from $45 to $55 nearly everywhere I looked online.)
