Brake Controller

Recommended Posts

I have a 2005 Silverado 2500 HD with the Duramax. I installed a brake controller about a year ago and it has been working fine.

Recently I blew the 30A fuse under the hood (Stud #2). I replaced this fuse, but now when I hit the brakes, the controller does not work.

If I manually engage the controller (with the lever) the trailer brakes work fine. Is there another fuse that I might have blown or have I fried my brake controller?

Stud #2 is the brake signal to the controller, right?

Unplug your brake controller and test the brake signal wire on the harness with a multimeter. If it's reading voltage when the brakes are pressed, then the input should be good and the controller has failed. I can't tell you what the voltage should be, though.

That will at least tell you if the truck is sending a signal to the controller. I'll bet the signal is good after replacing the fuse, but the real question is, what caused the fuse to blow, something on the truck or with the controller? The truck could have damaged the controller.

Stud #2 is the trailer wiring brake feed.

Tested the wires and have voltage to all but the dark blue wire (doesn't matter whether pedal is depressed or not).

My son was playing in the truck and held the manually brake controller on for 15 minutes while it was hooked up to the trailer. I think this might have blown the fuse.
