Running Board Installation?

Hi guys,

I just picked up used fiberglass Lund running boards to install on my 96 K1500. looks like these get bolted to the rocker panels, as well as tied into the frame for extra support.

Can anyone explain how to best bolt these into the closed-in rocker panels?

I'll pass on the 1/4" toggle bolts

Blind rivets? the one that have the threads in them perhaps

You should never install anything that attaches to the frame AND the rocker panel. The frame and body are isolated by rubber body mounts and flex at different rates. This often results in creaks and squeaks over time that are quite annoying. Also, attaching something to both areas will transmit extra road noise to the passenger compartment. Most quality running boards or nerf bars use solidly made brackets that either go to the bodymount bolts or bolt directly to the frame.

 

That's just my 0.02 but I've been around this business since the 80s.

Would you suggest rocker panel mount bolts and modify the brackets? Frame is too far away for solid cantilever mount in my opinion.

yea you have to make your own brackets and are usually held in place with self tapping screws.

 

i would not recomend these at all... you would be better off with nerf bars..

I already bought the fiberglass ones, so I'll try to use them.

How are the tubular boards mounted? To body or to the frame?
