Fuel Gauge

This never happened before, my "01 fuel gauge floated back and forth between 1/4 and 3/4 when I started it up this morning. The level is actually 1/4. Once I put it in gear and drove off it settled down. Does this mean the sending unit is going? The gauge has always been dead nuts on.

Sounds like the sending unit. Needs testing to be positive but that sure sounds like the problem.

After work I started it up and the gauge showe correct. I filled it up and it has been fine since. I'm hoping this was just a freak thing and wont happen again. Thanks for the replies.
