Stewmeistr Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 Hey guys,MPG is always a factor as well as $/gall and we just got a new BP which advertises E10...Now, I have a 2001 8.1L and was wondering if it would, not only run, but not harm the engine? Its not flex fuel etc... like much of the new trucks with the yellow gas caps, so I didn't know if it would be a problem or not. Its about $.35 cheaper/gal.. thats nice, but I don't want to do more damage to the fuel system or other parts of the truck trying to save a few dollars.Any help appreciated. Thanks,Rob
Hammer2785 Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 Most of the stations around here all carry e10 as standard unleaded. I havent had any problems with it.
Kodiak450 Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 The Hess I fill up at has E10 in it's gas, and none of my vehicles ever suffered any type of problem from it. I think it's only a 10% additive.
RonJ Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 Most of the stations around here all carry e10 as standard unleaded. I havent had any problems with it. Is the mpg the same ? I've heard that you lose more than $.35 worth of mileage.
ATMINF Posted September 11, 2008 Posted September 11, 2008 Alot of stations run it, but they can not go higher than 10%. The milage is effected and it can be as high as 20% lower(ie: regular 100% old school gas you get 10mpg, the new 90%old school +10 ethn= 8mpg). This is not to say that running it will automatically lower your MPG by 20%, but it will effect it and in different motors/cars the impact can vary. It all has to do with the BTU count that reg gas has(higher) vs. Ethn has(lower).
ZZ327 Posted September 11, 2008 Posted September 11, 2008 E 10s only been around since the mid 80s. The rest of the US doesnt have a problem running with it.
dewfpo Posted September 11, 2008 Posted September 11, 2008 No worries, been using E10 since the mid 80's. DEWFPO

It all has to do with the BTU count that reg gas has(higher) vs. Ethn has(lower). E10 does not cause a 20% decrease in FE. E10 contains 97% of the energy that is contained in regular gas. While each vehicle is affected differently a 3% drop in energy contet does not lead to a 20% drop in FE. E85 can lead to a 20-30% decrease because it only has 67% of the energy contained in regular gas.
Kodiak450 Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 I've never experienced a drop in power using E10, if anything it feels sorta like a little more power. I've used cheap fuel in the past from gas stations I never heard of, but never again! Those stations are run be Muscums and send most of the money they make back to their country. Then God Forbid if they call you for a snow plowing estimate and say to you "Can you give me a better price?" (With their silly accents). Cheap , cheap, cheap! Oh and those filthy, dirty, smelly turbins they wear day in and day out.. PHEW!
Stewmeistr Posted September 12, 2008 Author Posted September 12, 2008 Thanks for the replies. I had heard of the drop in power/efficiency with E85, but I didn't know if it would affect my truck being only E10.. Well, to save almost $.50... I'll give it a shot. Sounds like a worth while bet. Thanks for the information. Rob
ATMINF Posted September 13, 2008 Posted September 13, 2008 vranasaurus your numbers maybe correct, but on my trucks and cars , I have lost about 2 miles per gallon (14city to 12 city) and in my camaro (17+to 13-14). This was on the same drives. the only diffence was going from a 100% regular gas to a eth mix gas. I know that the BTU amount is alot lower in E85 at approx 65-70%, but for some reason on my cars and trucks the E10 mix hammers my MPG. Could be just me, but I talked to other motorheads like me that are anal about their cas, and they noticed a differece. A 3% diffence would be hardly noticed, abd could really be discounted as driving differences, weather conditions etc, but for me everytime I get gas that has a mix I notice a greater than 3% lower mpg. just my 2cents.
Stewmeistr Posted September 16, 2008 Author Posted September 16, 2008 Could it be the power hammer problem? By that I mean, since it makes less power, you hammer the gas a little more for the same butt o meter sensation? Curious, Rob
ATMINF Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 Rob, it could be? But I do drive pretty much the same as I aways do. All I know is that when I use the eth-gas mix even at a 10% mix ,I get worse gas milage. I always lose 1-2 mpg in the truck. Thats just my two cents.
