DSN46 Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 I just gotta ask, My tranny (4l60E) is whining/screeching just a little while shifting on acceleration. Everything else seems fine. No slipping that I can feel and I have all gears. It also puts load on the truck when it is in Park.. not much, just enough to bump the truck forward a little when first starting (maybe normal?). Can anyone tell me, in their best estimate, how long I have until rebuild? No towing or hard running. OR can anyone tell me how to make it last longer before I have to rebuild? Thank you, James
Wingnut Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 Sounds more to me like you're having slip yoke and/or u-joint problems.
DSN46 Posted September 19, 2008 Author Posted September 19, 2008 Thanks for the reply! No, it isn't slip yoke or U-joints. I know these issues pretty well. No sir.. this is "hydraulic" sounding, comin right from underneath my butt (under the truck of course). I think it is the front pump goin on me, but not sure. Just wondered if anyone else has had this problem and how long they went before rebuild: or what they did to mitigate it. James
Wingnut Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 Don't know...All the transmissions I've had go bad have been working like a champ one minute and not working the next. This last one puked itself all over the highway, blew the pan out while it was at it.
DSN46 Posted September 19, 2008 Author Posted September 19, 2008 Don't know...All the transmissions I've had go bad have been working like a champ one minute and not working the next. This last one puked itself all over the highway, blew the pan out while it was at it. Good Lord! I hope that doesn't happen to me. (explode all over the highway) I wished my life were that simple (as far as things breaking that is). Oh no.. I always have to go through all kinds of contortions and belly-aching and worrying over weird noises and strange activity.... THEN the part finally breaks. It would be nice if things would just let me know they are broken and be done with it so I could get on with fixing them. Thank you again. Anyone else? James
Schmids5.3l Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 It lurches forward when you start it? Like the torque converter is trying to engage? I'm not big on trannys either, I've had enough luck for mine to last thru what is has.
DSN46 Posted September 19, 2008 Author Posted September 19, 2008 Yes indeed. That's exactly what it does. It lurches forward when first started! Any ideas? James
svensk Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 It's a miracle mine has held on for 150K miles. I beat the shit out of it daily still. The only thing holding it together is the increased trans pressure.
pennzoil29 Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 I have 166+k on mine, and I've never changed the fluid or anything. I guess I better knock on wood. Good luck with yours, and I hope it doesn't leave you stranded.
Woodcutter Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 It also puts load on the truck when it is in Park.. not much, just enough to bump the truck forward a little when first starting (maybe normal?). I have observed this on skidders and other heavy equip when started on cold mornings, but not with pickups. Doesn't sound good.
