Worried!

So here's the deal:

By June of next year, I'll probably be buying a house. However, the house may end up being in the city. Right now I live in the country, and I am a little worried if I have to move to the city, especially if it's Toronto.

My question is: Do any of you guys live in a huge city - and if you do, how is driving and parking your truck in crammed lots and whatnot?

I currently work in London (Ontario not England) and it's not too bad here (It's tiny compared to Toronto)- but sometimes parking is a PITA. If I lived in London, having my truck would be a pain, but I would manage. I'm just worried about having to drive in a crazy congested town like Toronto everyday.

I used to live in the city. Sometimes it was tough, but most of the time it was fine. My house did have off-street parking which helped, but the small driveway was still kinda tight. I used to dread when friends wanted to go out in the city on a weekend. NEVER a parking spot big enough. Yes, it will be tight, but not impossible.

I live in Memphis, Tn. It's not bad driving a truck. I try to park in the outside parking spaces to keep people from hitting the truck with their doors other than that is good. You may become a great curb hopper too :)

Indianapolis isn't a real big city by any means but what limited downtown we have can suck for parking. I've found a lot of spots where I'm comfortable parking my truck where I know I'm not going to get hit or door dinged. You just get used to parking a lot farther out(several blocks in some cases) or on the upper levels of parking garages. Going into downtown on the weekends with buddies to go to bars, the Murat, or a Colts game suck but that's part of it. It's doable though.

I live in and drive between Austin and San Antonio Texas (areas contain about 2.8 million people) and there is not problem driving a truck anywhere here. Traffic can really really suck, but that's another story.

I live in suburban Southern California (it is basically one big city here anyway). Even though a lot of people here own large trucks, I would not want anything larger. Like what was said earlier, I also pass up parking spots sometimes and park further out, I tuck my mirrors in sometimes. The majority of the time most spaces handle an under 20' truck nicely and most any parking structure can handle at least 6'4" .

In short, It's more of a hassle but it's not annoying to drive and deal with a truck in a larger city on a day to day basis

When you say Toronto, do you mean downtown Toronto proper or in the general GTA?

If you're going to be right in Toronto, driving around there will be a PITA, but if you're outside TO proper (ie: Etobicoke), then driving around shouldn't be too bad. It also depends on how much driving around you think you'll be doing or need to be doing. Another option is a park and ride if that works. It also takes some getting used to.

Whew! Thanks a million guys! I was worried that I might have to get rid of my truck altogether, but I feel a heck of a lot better now. I'd probably downgrade to a RCSB if parking became a pain.

I currently live in Des Moines, IA which really isn't a big city. :) But it is for me, since my first dormitory at college held more people than the nearest town I grew up to. Downtown Des Moines is a little congested and thankfully I don't have to go down there much. The old lady works there though.

Personally I prefer my truck in heavy traffic situations. You can see better, people see you better and if I would have a tune, I could get out of the way quicker. The only trouble is parking spaces, but that isn't too bad here. Parking garages are tight, but you'll have that no matter what you drive. It sucks having to parallel park it along streets, so if that is something you will have to do, you'll have to get more creative, or walk further.

My old RCSB was a breeze to drive downtown. I could parallel park and maneuver it like a champ! I'd wager would be easier to manage than a four-door sedan.

For me, when I'm faced with a tight parking lot I always back into the spot. It seems to make it much easer to pull in and get out.

In the Denver Metro, the only time I have a problem is downtown parking, but I used to drive a '91 Suburban so my truck seems almost small in comparison. I just take my time and back and fill a lot to get into spaces. As for driving in traffic, I agree with the posts that I prefer being up where I can see and being in a larger vehicle that people notice. However, here in the Rocky Mountains my stock Z71 is tiny compared to a lot of what I see on the roads - lift kits, monster truck tires, full size Hummers, stretch limo full size Hummers, jacked up stretched Suburban limos... :D

I live in Houston and I just got a new truck that's a lot bigger than my old one. The first day back at work I parked in the bottom floor of our parking garage. Fitting in the space was no problem, and when I come in there's no one else in the garage. I left for lunch and the garage was full, so backing out of the angled spot was a pain. I must have done a 20 pt turn to inch my way out. I don't park in that area anymore.

As for driving in the city I've had no problems with it (except for traffic lights that are still dangling). It's a tight fit in my 20' garage, but it still fits!

Toronto itself (central GTA) can be a real PITA with a truck and they are like Nazis with parking. They will ticket you for even the slightest infraction. Spaces are tight and scarce.

I use my car to go there when possible.

Perfect! If I have problems, that's what I'll get then!

I tried that today in a crammed parking lot in the city and pulling out was a breeze. So much easier! thanks!
