Anybody know what this thing is? it makes a low pitched humming noise when the vehicle is turned on and is annoying as all hell. Is there any way to stop the humming? I do not have OnStar, could it be a speaker or microphoen for it? Here is a picture:

its so the government can keep tabs on what your doing.

looks like a microphone.

or its a vent, but doesn't look like one at all so i highly doubt it

Its not for OnStar. Its a sensor for the Automatic climate control with a little fan in it that is causing the noise. If you search around the forums there's lots of posts on it.

Good call!

The tiny fan that pulls air in to the sensor is probably what you are hearing. You could put duct tape over it but your heater will immediately go to 40,000 degrees.

I can't copy the complete bulletin,But heres the important stuff.....

Condition/Concern:

Customers may comment that they have a buzz/vibration/hum noise emanating from the headliner in an area that looks like a microphone or a small speaker.

Recommendation/Instructions:

The plastic escutcheon grill, which is round and located just above the driver to the left, is the interior ambient temperature sensor. The sensor is used in conjunction with the automatic HVAC (CJ2 or C68). On occasions, this sensor has been known to make a buzz/vibration/hum sound. The sensor uses a small fan to pull air over the sensor. This noise may be intermittent.

Although it may not be possible to alleviate all of the noise, Engineering has found that if the sensor is installed incorrectly that it may bind and cause the fan to make noise. Remove the sensor and while doing so check for any binding. Reinstall the sensor and re-test. If the noise is still present, the sensor itself may be noisy and require replacement.

gay in that bulliten is there anything that says approx. how long it would take? or do you know how much that part is...it really is annoying as all hell

I used to think that was a speaker, but then I read my owners manual for my truck but it is actually an interior sensor that measures the temperature of the air inside the truck.
